About the role
The Program Assistant position on our Social Welfare Allocations team offers foundational knowledge and skills to launch a career in grants management and public foundations. This hybrid role requires a minimum of two days in the office. You will join a team dedicated to ensuring vital services are provided to Holocaust survivors through the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference), a nonprofit organization with offices in New York, Israel, Germany, and Austria.
The Claims Conference secures material compensation for Holocaust survivors worldwide. Founded in 1951 by representatives of 23 major international Jewish organizations, it negotiates for and disburses funds to individuals and organizations, and seeks the return of Jewish property stolen during the Holocaust. Since 1952, the German government has paid over $95 billion in indemnification due to Claims Conference negotiations. In 2025, the organization distributed approximately $530 million in compensation and $960 million for survivors’ welfare needs, including home care, medicine, and food.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the first level of review for quarterly reports, ensuring accuracy to facilitate timely payments for partner agencies.
- Become an expert in the online reporting system to provide customer support to partner agencies navigating the system.
- Analyze data to identify programmatic features and spending trends, escalating issues as needed.
- Build positive relationships with partner agencies to support their compliance with policies and grant guidelines.
- Collaborate with your team to revise procedures, evaluate the impact of policy changes, and communicate updates to agencies.
- Complete additional quantitative and analytical tasks as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree with a focus on quantitative, social science, or related fields.
- Highly proficient in Excel (VLOOKUP, SUMIFS, pivot tables, INDEX + MATCH).
- Strong analytical aptitude and problem-solving capabilities.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Detail-oriented with a strong sense of ownership for your work.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, and collaborate effectively within a team.
- Extremely organized, with the ability to prioritize and accomplish tasks in a timely manner.

Pay
The target salary range for the Program Assistant - Social Welfare role in the New York City market is $50,000–$52,000. The final salary will be determined based on factors such as the candidate’s exact location, experience in similar roles, and expertise related to the qualifications.
