About the role

The Department of Biology at ETH Zurich invites applications for a tenured professorship at the Institute of Biochemistry (IBC). The successful candidate will lead an independent, world-class research programme in cellular organization and dynamics, working at the interface of cell biology, biochemistry, and biophysics to tackle cutting-edge problems in the field.

Example research areas include:

  • Spatial, temporal, and biophysical organization of cells
  • Gene expression and genome organization
  • Genome plasticity and stability
  • Regulation of cell growth and division
  • Organelle function and membrane biology
  • Membrane-less compartments
  • Intracellular trafficking and transport
  • Mechanisms of quality control and cellular homeostasis

The new professor will investigate biological systems at the cell, tissue, and/or (model) organism level, potentially driving the development of new technologies to probe cellular parameters. Integration of concepts from different fields to develop unified models of cellular function beyond correlative observations is desired.

The professorship will be embedded in the Department of Biology, which provides complementing expertise in structural biology, functional genomics, systems and computational biology, tissue development and homeostasis, and molecular oncology.

Responsibilities

  • Lead an independent, high-impact research programme in cellular organization and dynamics
  • Teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Contribute to the academic and scientific community at ETH Zurich

Undergraduate-level courses at ETH Zurich are typically taught in German or English, while graduate-level courses are taught in English.

Requirements

  • A covering letter formally addressed to the President of ETH Zurich, Prof. Dr. Joël Mesot
  • A curriculum vitae
  • A list of publications
  • Three statements on: a) research, b) teaching, c) leadership
  • Descriptions of the three most important achievements
  • A certificate of the highest degree

Applications must be submitted online by 31 August 2026.
