Summary Description

Washoe County School District is seeking highly motivated interns to support the district in day-to-day professional administrative tasks and activities. This internship offers practical experience in various areas of Washoe County School District operations.

Exemplary Duties/Responsibilities

  • Understand the overall concept of Washoe County School District, its mission, strategic plan, and assigned department goals.
  • Complete a variety of assignments related to a particular function, applying principles and practices of a professional course of study.
  • Compile data and analyze findings relating to an assigned project.
  • Operate a variety of office equipment and technical tools related to job assignments.
  • Communicate with members of the general public, officials from other agencies, and community groups to gather information necessary to complete assignments and projects.
  • Apply a thorough and detailed knowledge of relevant laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Work independently and as part of a team.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Willing to learn and receive hands-on experience.
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail.
  • Commit to 19 hours per week to be physically present at the facility.

Employment Standards

  • Education/Experience: Enrollment in an accredited college or university with major course work in a field related to Washoe County School District operations and functions.
  • Knowledge: Principles, methods, and problems of organization and management with particular reference to government functions and operations; principles and techniques of data collection and summary reporting.
  • Skills: Working independently; critical reasoning/thinking, understanding, interpreting, and applying laws, rules as they relate to specialty area(s); operating a personal computer and a variety of software packages, proficient in Microsoft Office, gathering and analyzing data; preparing clear, concise narrative and statistical reports, records, and correspondence; performing complex clerical and technical work; typing with speed and accuracy; evaluating situations accurately and taking effective courses of action; exercising tact, judgment, and strategy with a variety of people and situations; reading and writing English at a level required for successful job performance; principles and practice of supervision; understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Physical Demands

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

Work Environment

The environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, residences, or commercial vehicles, e.g., use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.

Additional Job Information

  • This position is contingent upon continued funding on a fiscal year-to-year basis. The hiring administrator may retain incumbent for the duration of the assignment without re-advertising.

  • New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Non-licensed employees will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.
