Professional Development Assistant Nurse Manager – Emergency Medicine

Assistant Nurse Managers are registered nurses who are responsible for the operation of the nursing unit over a specific time period. The Assistant Nurse Manager must have a strong foundation of clinical knowledge and skills on which to base judgments and make decisions, organizing abilities to direct nursing tasks and operations, and interpersonal skills to facilitate communication and the work of others. The Assistant Nurse Manager accepts responsibility for, and is accountable for, their own nursing practice and seeks out opportunities for learning and self-development.

Three fundamental responsibilities include planning, coordinating, and evaluating unit nursing activities. The Assistant Nurse Manager identifies and implements nursing interventions, evaluates results for diverse patient populations, directs and acts as a resource to the nursing team, and promotes compliance with policies.

Responsibilities

  • Provide total, comprehensive, continuous, and patient-centered care, including assessing, documenting, planning, implementing, teaching, and evaluating a comprehensive nursing plan of care.
  • Deliver direct patient care, ensure patient satisfaction, train and delegate duties, and adhere to university policies and federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Exercise autonomous nursing care based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge, consistent with American Nurses' Association Standards of Practice and Professional Performance.
  • Use independent judgment within interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care.
  • Guide and mentor nurses in their development, including selecting and hiring staff in collaboration with the leadership team.
  • Develop, measure, and evaluate staff performance and practice outcomes.
  • Provide continuous performance feedback to advance nurses' and technicians' knowledge, skills, and practice.
  • Ensure evidence-based standards of care are practiced in collaboration with Clinical Nurse Educators and CNLs.
  • Develop, coordinate, facilitate, and evaluate orientation, competency, in-service, and continuing education programs for staff.
  • Monitor and ensure excellence in clinical practice and patient care delivery.
  • Lead and build capacity for excellence in quality, safety, patient experience, operational metrics, and regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as a visible leader and role model in achieving hospital and unit service line mission and goals.
  • Embrace change management, innovation, and systems thinking.

Requirements

  • Valid California Registered Nurse License without restriction.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), UC Davis Health CPR, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certificates.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), or a Bachelor's degree (in a field other than nursing) paired with a Master's of Science in Nursing (MSN).
  • 5 years of experience in an Emergency Department specialty, specifically in a Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center.
  • Active member of a department committee for at least 1 year.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English, and utilize medical terminology appropriately.
  • Knowledge of current trends in nursing, legal implications in clinical practice, and performance improvement/evidence-based practice.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
  • Flexibility in work schedule and ability to inspire and achieve outcomes in staff learning.
  • Demonstrates accountability, professionalism, and adaptability to change.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Mobile Intensive Care Nurse (MICN) Certificate.
  • CEN or CCRN certification.
  • Master's of Science in Nursing (MSN).
  • Experience with educating staff, leading departmental initiatives, and adult learner knowledge.
  • Experience in teaching/education for clinical staff or community, and involvement in process improvement projects.

About the Department

Emergency Medicine at UC Davis provides Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma care for more than 33 of California's 58 counties. The department features the only Level 1 pediatric trauma center in inland Northern California, verified by the American College of Surgeons. The Emergency Department serves approximately 70,000 patients annually and is equipped to provide comprehensive emergency care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The department includes a dedicated team of physicians, nurses, 42 residents, and 26 specialists across medical and surgical disciplines. Registered Nurses in the Emergency Department provide care to adult and pediatric patients with a variety of emergent needs, including acute, chronic, trauma, critical, or behavioral health conditions.

Department-Specific Scope

The Professional Development AN2 is responsible for establishing an environment that facilitates professional growth, role competence, and proficiency in emergency medicine practice. This role is accountable for achieving professional and clinical outcomes for assigned staff and collaborates with leadership to interview, select, and hire unit staff. For the first 6 months to one year, new hires report directly to the Professional Development AN2 to ensure continuous performance feedback and successful enculturation.

The Professional Development AN2 works closely with the leadership team to provide structure for staff competence, patient safety, and quality care. Key outcomes include the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and attitudes that enhance patient safety and quality of care.

Pay

Hourly salary range: $60.15 - $128.35.

Schedule

Full-time (100%) position, Monday through Friday, with working hours from 8 am to 5 pm (variable).
