About the Role
Supervises hospital or professional coding staff and assists the management team in the day-to-day operations of the department, focusing on reimbursement, coding, abstracting, and education. This position helps implement and facilitate ongoing medical coding, abstracting, auditing, monitoring, and physician/coder educational activities for existing and new clinics, locations, and hospitals. The role ensures compliance with all federal and state coding healthcare rules, regulations, administrative requirements, and guidance. Serves as a positive role model for all staff and a representative of the department.
Responsibilities
- Supervises coding staff and assists the management team in daily operations related to reimbursement, coding, abstracting, productivity, quality, and education.
- Ensures coding backlogs, work queues, and charge lag remain at acceptable levels.
- Acts as an expert coding resource for coders, providers, revenue cycle, specialty groups, and meetings.
- Manages personnel, including interviewing, hiring, coaching, counseling, discipline, and performance evaluation in conjunction with management.
- Develops and maintains coding-related policies, procedures, and training materials.
- Identifies budgetary needs and maintains fiscal stewardship.
- Conducts and/or oversees internal and external auditing to ensure compliance with medical record documentation, coding, and billing guidelines.
- Works with staff to analyze and resolve issues impacting coding and billing.
- Maintains effective, open, and ongoing communication.
- Extracts, analyzes, and reports data to the appropriate management team.
- Serves as a liaison to vendors and provides input and tests information systems.
- Assists in staff coding as needed.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Current HIM/Coding Certification through one of the following:
- American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
- American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)
- Five (5) years of medical coding experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s degree or higher in Health Information Management or a related field.
- Previous clinical experience as an RN, LPN, or Medical Assistant (highly desirable).
- Extensive experience in ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, MS-DRG, HCC, and APR-DRG assignment for hospital supervising positions and multi-specialty coding.
- Experience with E&M coding, procedural/surgical coding, and knowledge of governmental billing and coding regulations, including the “Teaching Physician Guidelines” for professional coding supervisors.
- Previous supervisory or project management experience.
- Seven (7) years of medical coding experience.

Working Environment
- Standard office environment.
- Visual strain may be encountered in viewing computer screens, spreadsheets, and other written material.
- May require travel.

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40. Shift: Day. Exempt status.
