About the Role
Directly or through others, the incumbent has ultimate accountability for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of a Gas Fired Power Plant. This includes water treatment systems, circulating water systems, condensate/feedwater systems, heat recovery steam generator systems, turbine systems, generator systems, control systems, electrical systems, and various other plant systems.
Responsibilities
- Inspect, repair, and maintain various types of plant mechanical, hydraulic, and steam-related equipment, including pumps, boilers, turbines, valves, compressors, couplings, safety valves, fans, heat exchangers, and other devices.
- Perform electrician duties as assigned, requiring electrician experience or a strong electrical background.
- Complete multi-skill qualification requirements, including:
- Operations qualification
- Chemical/environmental qualification
- Electrical qualification
- Control Room Operator qualification
- I&C qualification
- Mechanical qualification
- Work shift work and overtime as required to ensure plant reliability.
- Estimate starting times for idle generation units and follow prescribed startup procedures to bring units online at specified times.
- Operate PC-based control systems as the Inside Operator in the Steam Plant, adjusting turbine/generator loading as required.
- Read meters and record data at specified intervals in logs and computers.
- Report malfunctioning equipment or abnormal meter readings/equipment performance to supervisors and complete appropriate records.
- Perform troubleshooting, document issues, and assist in resolving problems discovered during shifts.
- Maintain plant operating history through timely completion of logs and required documentation.
- Make decisions and recommend repair techniques to senior operators or supervisors.
- Provide specialized, accurate written documentation of repairs, measurements, readings, and conditions through reports or MAXIMO work orders.
- Perform substation and transformer maintenance, protective relay work, low/medium voltage breaker repair, arc flash analysis, and electrical/workplace safety tasks.
- Conduct low, medium, and high voltage switching, clearing, and grounding activities for all plant auxiliary equipment.
- Control system voltages and frequencies as requested by dispatchers.
- All other duties as assigned.
Preferred Skills
- Understand basic AC/DC Circuit Theory, Digital and Analog Circuit Theory, Power Plant Cycle Theory, and Mechanics.
- Develop and implement plant operating procedures.
- Understand the operational relationships of mechanical equipment to plant systems.
Requirements
- High School education or GED equivalent with four years of related experience in a related industry, or 2 years of related experience and a 2-year Associate’s Degree in Power/Industrial Technology.
- All applicants (excluding those currently employed in specific Fossil Generation positions) must pass the Plant Operator Selection System/Power Plant Operations and Maintenance (POSS/MASS) exam to be considered. Exams are administered as needed by Human Resources.
- Electrician experience or a strong electrical background is required.
- Must be willing to work a 12-hour rotating shift schedule.
- Bargaining unit position represented by IBEW 2337.
