Production Supervisor - 3rd Shift
About the Role
This position reports to the Production Manager. The role requires thorough knowledge of the equipment and processes in the areas, as well as acquired knowledge of planning, organizing, controlling, coordinating, and directing manufacturing personnel. The supervisor will possess a high level of supervisory capability, which ensures leadership and motivation of subordinates to attain high standards of quality and productivity. The role requires the ability to react to change in a timely and organized manner, evaluate and weigh alternatives, establish appropriate priorities, and formulate sound decisions affecting all phases of the operation. The supervisor will foster harmonious relations within their shift and between shifts. Accountability includes safety, product quality, exercising cost control, meeting production schedules, the proper uses of direct and indirect labor, accurate record-keeping and reporting, minimizing scrap and rework costs, training new and existing personnel, and communicating with other supervisory and management personnel as well as subordinates. Frequent use of computer terminals and personal computers is required. The supervisor must have thorough knowledge and awareness of the safety issues related to each operation performed within the department, and must assure that all employees adhere to safe practices at all times. Understanding of The Valmont Way theory of Lean Manufacturing principles is required.
Core Responsibilities
- Demonstrate active employee engagement by conducting effective everyday "stand up-start up meetings" to identify if all employees are "fit for duty" that day; utilize stretch and flex exercises as part of warming up for work and to identify if employees demonstrate motion concerns.
- Enforce work hardening policy: any new hires (direct hire or temps) should only be scheduled for 40 hours/week for first 30 days without exceptions.
- Ensure Valmont safety absolutes are not compromised at any time.
- In case of a safety infraction (near miss, first aid, recordable, LTI, property damage): assist in the investigation, demonstrate effective containment actions are in place for all employees to return to their work centers safely, and present root cause findings as well as countermeasures (short term and long term) to all employees as well as management.
- Demonstrate "first time quality – work attitude" by making sure any equipment issues are immediately reported, owning the root cause analysis of ANY rejected pole, performing time sensitive fact finding to ensure repeat rejects do not occur, and partnering with Quality Supervisor to ensure correct solution is in place and documenting performance issues with HR.
- Effectively plan work including daily task assignments (with employee assignments planned in advance) and executing weekly schedules and reporting any schedule concerns.
Essential Functions
- Monitor employee's performance to ensure all safety policies and procedures are followed and adhered to.
- Implement and assign work schedules to maximize the utilization of manpower, machines, and equipment.
- Define expected production standards and monitor performance standards of assigned personnel.
- Observe personnel to ensure the proper operation of assigned work and equipment.
- Ensure inspection checks and quality assurance occur to produce high quality products.
- Promote a continuous productivity improvement climate that encourages suggestions for operational improvement.
- Administer and support company policies and procedures in a fair and consistent manner.
- Train new employees about divisional and organizational activities and safety policies and procedures.
- Prepare daily time sheets for hourly employees, production summaries, overtime and downtime reports.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's with 5+ years relevant experience OR Associates Degree with 7+ years relevant experience OR 9+ years of relevant experience.
- Five (5) years of experience in manufacturing or logistics/distribution environment.
- A strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Outlook.
- Strong leadership skills and the ability to support divisional business objectives.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Ability to recognize and solve practical problems and/or issues.
- Ability to communicate and interact with coworkers in a positive manner.
- Ability to effectively interpret and present information both one-on-one and in front of an audience.
- Ability to calculate figures such as pay changes for employees, proportions and percentages, and product dimensions.
- Ability to work in a high volume, fast paced environment.
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess
- Three years of experience in a supervisory position.
- Previous supervisory experience in a manufacturing or logistic operations environment.
- Practical hands on experience in Lean Manufacturing.
