Production Specialist

About the Role

As a Production Specialist (Finish), you will operate and maintain equipment in a safe and efficient manner while ensuring product quality, housekeeping, and communication across shifts.

Responsibilities

• Operate equipment safely and efficiently, including rip saws, humidification systems, and packaging lines.
• Dump dumpsters and hoppers safely, clean up spills, and ensure proper stacking of skins at outfeed.
• Monitor operations and parameters of equipment, resolving irregularities to maximize run time.
• Perform saw blade changes safely and efficiently.
• Monitor application of humidification water and prime line packaging, resolving irregularities to ensure smooth operations.
• Optimize material usage and notify operators of line needs.
• Assist with booth and line cleanups safely and efficiently.
• Ensure product and materials are stored in appropriate locations.
• Monitor door skin packaging and notify packagers of irregularities.
• Fill in during breaks, vacations, or as needed during production.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization in assigned areas.
• Ensure proper labeling of finished door skin loads and perform quality tests/data as assigned.
• Participate in SQDCI (Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost, and Inventory) initiatives.
• Remove press line marked rejects from production and ensure correct stacking to avoid product damage.
• Apply packaging specifications to operational decisions and understand quality specifications and customer needs.
• Perform system and area clean-up tasks, maintaining housekeeping throughout the facility.
• Maintain tools, brooms, air lines, and forklifts, returning them to designated areas after use.
• Communicate with operators, assistants, and management regarding skin quality, process conditions, supply issues, maintenance needs, hazards, and accidents/injuries.
• Maintain complete and accurate written and/or electronic records and data.
• Be familiar with equipment components, sub-systems, and terminology, performing maintenance and preventive maintenance tasks to minimize downtime.
• Complete daily forklift inspections and operate a forklift as necessary.
• Learn and understand other jobs in the department for coverage during breaks, lunch, and vacations.
• Abide by all company policies and procedures and maintain required tools for the job.

Safe Work Practices

• Wear hearing protection, safety glasses, and steel toe footwear at all times.
• Stay aware of the job at hand and be alert for slippery floors; keep work areas clean and free of debris.
• Tie back long hair above the collar; avoid loose clothing, jewelry, and dangling accessories on the plant floor.
• Use proper lifting techniques and watch for forklift traffic.
• Maintain three points of contact when climbing stairs and ladders.
• Only use approved low-pressure devices to remove fiber and sawdust from clothing.
• Lockout/Tagout all energy sources before working on equipment.
• Avoid contact with hot steam pipes.
• Comply with all safety training, including Lockout/Tagout, Confined Space, Fall Protection, Ergonomics, Forklift, PPE, Emergency Preparedness, Hazard Communication, Electrical Safety, and Blood-borne Pathogen Prevention.
• Discuss all non-routine tasks with your manager prior to starting.

Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

• Eye protection and hearing protection at all times.
• Gloves when handling skins.
• Fall protection when working at unguarded heights above six feet or operating high lift equipment.
• Face shield and safety glasses when using or within 10 feet of wire wheels, power wire brushes, cut-off wheels, portable grinders, or bench grinders.

Task-Specific Safety Instructions

• Priming skins: Wear gloves; stay off storage conveyors unless locked out; keep floors clean and dry; get help straightening heavy loads; keep scissor lift guards in place; avoid nip points unless equipment is locked out.
• Paint Booth Cleanup: Wear gloves and white suits; never clean troughs unless booth chains and paint supply are locked out; use proper lifting techniques; keep work surfaces clean and dry; use caution when scraping troughs.
• Cleaning paint booth air filters: Wear gloves and a properly fitted dust mask; avoid welding or cutting in the vicinity.
• Cleaning humidification spray tips: Wear latex gloves and safety glasses; lockout supply water and bleed off pressure; never lean over the conveyor; use properly sized wrenches; keep work surfaces clean and dry.
• Machine maintenance: Consult task supervisor for unfamiliar work; do not attempt untrained tasks.
• Resetting breakers and overloads on starters: Ensure equipment is de-energized; wear proper arc flash gear; never stand in front of the cabinet when energizing.
• Moving loads with a forklift: Use backstops; do not exceed lift capacity; use horns at blind spots; travel with empty forks close to the floor; dry wet surfaces; carry loads as close to the floor as possible; do not carry riders; follow all JELD-WEN lift truck procedures (wear seat belts).
• Working on elevated structures: Analyze the situation; wear fall protection when above six feet or operating high lift equipment.
• Cleaning around stacker and banders: Follow Lock-Out procedures; keep areas clean and free of clutter; wipe up spills.
• Equipment start-up: Recognize startup horns; stay clear of saws, pinch points, and moving machinery; communicate with operators.
• Cleanup involving air chisels: Wear goggles; comply with safety precautions in Material Safety Data Sheets; lockout equipment; wear specified PPE for resin handling.
• Cleanup Equipment (Ink Jets, Change Liquid and Air Filters): Turn off equipment; depressurize; use catch pans for spills; dispose of cleanup material properly.
• Skin/Trim Pileups: Lockout equipment before entering saw shacks; ensure saw blades have stopped before reaching into equipment.
• Cleaning fiberline around belts and motors: Keep hands and clothing away from saws and pinch points; ensure belt and chain guards are in place; lockout conveyor drives before unplugging; follow PPE requirements for resinated fibers.
• Handling master skins: Wear gloves when handling hot skins; lockout unloader belts before working on them; keep hands away from unloader belts and rollers; communicate with crew; use fixed ladders; follow plant-specific procedures.
• Exterior equipment cleanup, maintenance, and repair: Watch for traffic, slick or uneven surfaces; follow all safety training; consult managers for unfamiliar tasks; do not attempt untrained work; follow lock-out training.
• Repairs, maintenance, and non-routine tasks: Discuss safety implications with shift manager; use proper lifting techniques; use correct tools; follow lock-out training.
• Moving dies: Use forklifts rated for the load; drive slowly and cautiously; travel with dies to the back of the forks.
• General Cleanup: Only use compressed air on motors and areas approved for automated equipment.
