About the role
The Local 6S Technical Expert is a support role responsible for assisting the Head of 6S Lean with the day to day execution, coordination, and sustainment of 6S Lean initiatives across the York campus and mines. This position provides hands-on technical support, data analysis, training facilitation, and follow up to ensure consistency, accountability, and progress of 6S standards and sustainability. The role focuses on implementation, reinforcement of a continuous improvement mindset, helping translate strategy into action while serving as a trusted technical resource.
Responsibilities
- Promote a culture of safety within the department by setting a positive example and fostering environments where safe practices are a priority
- Support the Head of 6S Lean in executing daily 6S Lean activities, priorities, and action items across the plant and mines
- Act as a technical resource for 6S Lean methodologies, tools, and standards under the guidance of the Head of 6S Lean
- Assist in planning, tracking, and reporting progress of 6S initiatives, audits, and Kaizen events
- Promote safety as a top priority by supporting preventative safety actions, including audits, risk assessments, and documentation
- Utilize Lean tools to support improvements in campus-wide 6S audit scores and workplace organization
- Conduct 6S training sessions, including new hire orientation, 6S Champion presentations, Lean Peer group support and refresher trainings, as needed
- Support cross-functional Kaizen teams by coordinating activities, facilitating problem-solving tools, and tracking action items
- Draft, update, and maintain SOPs and JSAs in collaboration with process owners
- Collect data and support preparation of presentations and reports for review with the leadership team
- Perform routine audits of implemented standards and assist in identifying gaps and corrective actions
- Track and follow up on corrective actions to ensure closure and sustainability
- Enter maintenance work orders and purchase requisitions in SAP as required to support improvement activities
- Support recurring meetings related to 6S Lean by preparing materials, capturing actions, and communicating updates
- Work collaboratively with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Quality, Procurement, R&D, and other departments to support improvement work and 6S efforts
- Support coordination with external vendors and internal stakeholders to facilitate improvement activities, project needs, and other business priorities
- Provide support for additional projects and business priorities as assigned by leadership
- Reinforce Lean Daily Management practices by supporting visual management, standard work, and team engagement activities
- Assist in tracking basic financial impacts of improvements (cost savings, efficiency gains) under the direction of leadership
- Utilize plant communication platforms (e.g., Workvivo) to support awareness and engagement around 6S activities
Qualifications
- 2–4 years of experience working with Lean, 6S, or continuous improvement methodologies in a manufacturing or industrial environment
- High conversational and written proficiency in English
- Familiarity with data entry, reporting, and system usage; SAP experience preferred
- Hands-on, detail-oriented, and execution-focused with a strong follow-through mindset
- Ability to work collaboratively with teams at all levels of the organization
- Strong analytical and organizational skills
- Comfortable supporting multiple initiatives simultaneously and adapting to changing priorities
- Ability to use digital communication platforms (e.g., Workvivo) to support team engagement and information sharing
