About the role
BNSF | Tech is the technology division of BNSF, one of the largest U.S. railroads. We transport essential products and materials across 28 western states and 3 Canadian provinces, supporting communities worldwide.
Responsibilities
- Transform complex rail logistics and workflows into high-performing products that meet user needs and enhance efficiency.
- Develop software platforms enabling our product and business teams to create applications that serve our customers through reusable and scalable software services.
- Build and operate large-scale distributed systems such as messaging systems, micro-services, data platforms, serverless runtimes, and customer experiences.
- Apply AI/ML to develop scalable and highly reliable solutions for high-speed, large-scale predictions on distributed systems.
- Solve broad challenges in an agile environment, focusing on innovation in distributed computing and driving industry transformation.
- Collaborate with application teams to enhance reliability and performance, designing and operating scalable systems across various environments.
- Work with BNSF teams to create products that improve rail network operations, demonstrating operational excellence by monitoring, troubleshooting, and resolving production issues.
Requirements
- Minimum 3 years of software development or related experience.
- Experience programming in at least one modern language (e.g., Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, etc.).
- Familiarity with observability stacks (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry).
- Experience with secure coding practices.
- Ability to work in cross-functional teams and communicate with stakeholders.
- Experience participating in design reviews, incident retrospectives, or RFC processes.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new technical concepts and adapt to new technologies quickly.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Qualifications
- Authorized to work in the US.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, or related field.
- Able to work now and in the future without BNSF’s assistance in obtaining, maintaining, or extending employment authorization (including H-1B, STEM OPT/CPT, or TN nonimmigrant status).
- Engineering experience with a public PaaS or cloud provider (AWS, Azure or GCP).
- Interest in sustainable infrastructure and cost/resource awareness.
- Familiarity with frameworks like React, Angular, Node.js, Spring Boot.
- Prior experience developing and delivering highly reliable distributed systems in production environment.

Pay
The US base salary range for this full-time position is $123,750 - $175,000.
Schedule
This is a full-time remote position. Employees may work from anywhere within the contiguous 48 states of the United States. Travel is up to 20%. Employees will be required to occasionally travel to our corporate headquarters in Fort Worth, TX for in-person meetings. Travel expenses for business needs will be covered by BNSF.
