About the Role

The Humanitarian Services Product Management team creates human-centered digital experiences for clients and workforce, supporting critical services such as disaster financial assistance, situational awareness for response and logistics, and volunteer onboarding and workforce management.

This position focuses on Volunteer Connection, a web- and mobile-based volunteer workforce management system. The system supports recruitment, matching, onboarding, training, deployment, engagement, and recognition of volunteers across the American Red Cross. The role takes a holistic view of the volunteer experience, aiming to simplify volunteering, help volunteers discover opportunities, and support mission-critical services.

This is a 100% remote position. The selected candidate can work from anywhere in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the full product lifecycle, from discovery and design through development, release, and continuous improvement.
  • Partner with business, technical, design, and program stakeholders to identify opportunities, define solutions, and translate business needs into actionable product requirements, user stories, process flows, and other artifacts.
  • Serve as the central coordination point across product teams and initiatives, aligning stakeholders, clarifying requirements, and prioritizing work.
  • Act as a player-coach by mentoring Associate Product Managers and strengthening product management practices.
  • Plan and prioritize work across multiple teams, minimizing dependencies and risks.
  • Recruit, supervise, and support contractor and volunteer associate product managers and business analysts.
  • Provide coaching and training to product management staff to ensure work meets team standards.
  • Continuously improve product team standards, processes, and capabilities.
  • Manage the product roadmap and plans in alignment with business needs and priorities to deliver measurable outcomes.
  • Advise leadership on potential opportunities, challenges, and risks.
  • Convert business strategy into system design and functionality, ensuring alignment between technical and business units.
  • Facilitate discovery and collection of business requirements using design thinking and business analysis methods.
  • Use data-driven insights to make evidence-based decisions and enable continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with service designers and technical teams on product design and solutions using human-centered design principles.
  • Facilitate cross-functional business reviews and alignment of product requirements with stakeholders such as finance, legal, security, and user support.
  • Create and organize Agile-oriented user stories into epics, phases, and functions in partnership with design, technical, and business leads.
  • Coordinate with Scrum Masters and technical teams to manage current and backlogged user stories.
  • Direct technical experts to meet business application needs and monitor performance metrics.
  • Manage vendor and partner relationships to ensure deliverables, timelines, and quality of service.
  • Identify and resolve issues, influence stakeholders, and manage relationships effectively.
  • Gather business feedback for future development in collaboration with business leads.
  • Communicate technical solutions clearly to business partners and serve as a technical advisor to new stakeholders.
  • Ensure business units are prepared for and engaged in User Acceptance Testing.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Experience: Minimum 7 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Management Experience: Volunteer management experience is desired.
  • Experience coaching other product managers in a “player-coach” role.
  • Experience working with diverse communities of end users and business stakeholders.
  • Experience with system design, development processes, and business process redesign.
  • Experience with Agile and waterfall development frameworks.
  • Experience with design thinking methods.
  • Business acumen and proficiency in Microsoft applications (e.g., Outlook, Project, Visio, Excel, PowerPoint), collaboration tools (e.g., Confluence, Jira, Monday), and design tools (e.g., Mural, Lucidchart).
  • Ability to coordinate tasks and deadlines across concurrent projects.
  • Strong relationship-building and management skills with business and technical teams.
  • Independent, self-motivated, and excellent communication skills, including clear and effective writing.
  • Experience working with internal customers, management, and outside vendors.
  • Experience managing expectations and emerging issues.
  • Ability to consolidate technical and business information for leadership presentations and reporting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a product manager for web and mobile-based digital platforms.
  • Prior experience in nonprofit, humanitarian, or mission-driven organizations.
  • Significant volunteer experience and/or managing volunteers.

Physical Requirements

  • Depending on work assignment, may require ordinary ambulatory skills to visit other locations or the ability to stand, walk, and manipulate light to medium weights of up to 20 pounds.
  • Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment, and read technical information.
  • Overall mobility is essential, including sitting for long periods, driving a vehicle, and working under challenging conditions.

Work is primarily performed indoors with potential exposure to safety and health hazards related to emergency services relief work. May require travel and participation in meetings and conferences. Staff may be asked to be on 24-hour call during major disasters and deploy annually for up to 2 weeks to support disaster mission delivery in-person.

Pay

The annual salary range for this position is $105,000 - $125,000. Salaries are aligned to the specific geographic location where the work is performed and may vary based on skills, experience, and comparison to other employees in the role.
