Producing Instructor

About the role

UCLA Extension is one of the top programs of its kind, offering approximately 4,500 classes and non-degree certificate programs annually to over 35,000 students. The Entertainment Studies Program covers disciplines such as Business and Management of Entertainment, Film & TV Development, Producing, Directing, Acting, Cinematography, Post-Production, Film Scoring, Independent Music Production, and Music Business. Instructors are sought for the Producing and/or line producing for Film and/or Television courses, with a focus on bringing current or recent professional experience to help students navigate the evolving industry landscape.

Classes are offered in person, online, or live online (via Zoom). In-person and live online classes meet once a week for 11 weeks, typically evenings from 7-10pm. Online classes are asynchronous and deadline-driven. All courses use Canvas as the online course support platform.

Responsibilities

• Develop or update course syllabus to meet campus approval requirements, in consultation with the UCLA Extension Program Director and Program Manager.
• Use subject-matter expertise to impart knowledge to students and leverage additional resources (e.g., arrange for guest speakers) to enhance the curriculum.
• Design interactive and motivational classroom activities to engage participants and reinforce student learning.
• Update materials periodically and regularly monitor course evaluations to make adjustments and improvements to the curriculum.
• Utilize Canvas as the course support platform for in-person, live online, online, and hybrid courses.
• Post final student grades to the transcript system within two weeks after the course end date.
• Respond to student questions and learning needs in a timely manner.
• Communicate with the Program Director and Program Staff promptly regarding course-related matters.
• Complete required administrative tasks, including new hire paperwork, updating quarterly syllabi, posting bio and photo on the UCLA Extension website, accepting quarterly contracts, submitting textbook orders, and communicating classroom needs.
• Participate in required orientations and instructor training programs.
• Assist in occasional program activities such as open houses, guest lecturing, and community events.
• Employ culturally sensitive teaching methodologies inclusive of both domestic and international student populations.
• Stay current with the professional body of knowledge in the field of Producing for Film and Television.
• Respond to student inquiries about final grades and consult with the Program Director as needed.
• Maintain a record of final grades for up to 13 months following the last class session.

Requirements

• Professional experience in Producing and/or line producing for Film and/or Television.
• Commitment to the highest level of academic standards and integrity.
• Current knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in the subject area.
• Highly effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to convey conceptual and complex ideas.
• Outstanding interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence.
• Proficiency in or willingness to learn instructional technology and online teaching tools.

Qualifications

• Basic: Professional experience in the area you apply to teach.
• Preferred: College-level and/or continuing education teaching experience.
• Preferred: Experience designing curriculum and measuring student performance.

Pay

$3,000 per course, quarterly.

Schedule

Courses are typically 33 hours in total, meeting once a week for 11 weeks. In-person and live online classes are usually held evenings from 7-10pm. Online classes are asynchronous with no live interaction.

Employment Details

Instructors are hired on a quarterly contract basis. Employment is contingent upon formal academic approval by the Academic Senate of the University of California. Teaching assignments are "by agreement," with compensation and deliverables outlined in the Instructor’s Contract. UCLA Extension makes no commitment to hire until a signed contract is received. If a course section is cancelled, the contract is voided.
