About the role

The Produce Manager is responsible for the successful operation and profitability of the produce department, including training, directing, and monitoring all department staff. Department Managers are also required to fulfill the duties of the Manager on Duty (MOD) on a scheduled basis.

Responsibilities

  • Provide World Class Customer Service as a top priority.
  • Exemplify integrity, responsibility, and excellence while adhering to all policies.
  • Create an inviting, full, and shopable department.
  • Order for the produce department and maintain accurate inventory levels.
  • Manage margin, COGS, and overall department profitability, including minimizing shrink and maximizing effective purchasing.
  • Set and maintain the department daily, ensuring the produce rack is consistently fresh, full, and abundant.
  • Cull, crisp, rotate, and properly handle/store produce.
  • Ensure only certified organic produce is ordered and received.
  • Maintain in-stock products and conditions to meet company standards.
  • Ensure all tools and equipment are cleaned according to health department and company standards.
  • Receive all incoming produce orders per company standards.
  • Offer and follow up on special orders.
  • Train and monitor department personnel.
  • Work with other department managers to cross-train staff for all needed tasks.
  • Conduct active and passive demos.
  • Merchandise shelves, endcaps, and dynamic displays.
  • Assist in interviewing and hiring for department needs.
  • Work with the store manager to address performance and/or disciplinary issues.
  • Handle register functions, including backup cashiering, managing customer returns, addressing complaints, and covering register shift changes.
  • Maintain the safety and security of customers and employees.
  • Manage business disruptions such as loiterers, solicitation, emergency weather, or bathroom misuse.
  • Answer customer questions per company standards and policies, including the use of Structure/Function statements.
  • Continually increase product knowledge.
  • Utilize email and IS programs as needed.
  • Open and close the store, including completing DSR and closing cash processes if required.
  • Work a schedule based on store needs, including evenings, weekends, and holidays (40 hours per week, 5 days).
  • Attend mandatory store meetings.

Requirements

  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent preferred.
  • Ability to obtain forklift certification.
  • 1-2 years of experience in a grocery/retail/produce environment preferred; natural foods background is a plus.
  • 1-2 years of experience supervising others preferred.
  • Ability to pass food safety training courses and maintain compliance.
  • Ability to manage changing priorities and stay focused.
  • Sense of urgency in completing tasks.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to take direction and follow through.
  • Must be cashier trained and able to count currency.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
