Process Engineer

About the role

The SGL site in St. Marys, Pennsylvania, is our largest graphite component processing site worldwide. It is characterized by its broad product portfolio and expertise in machined, purified and CVD coated parts used especially in the fast-growing LED and semiconductor industries. The site is part of the Business Unit Graphite Solutions. This position will focus on coatings applied to the surface of machined graphite parts but may also include carbon composite and/or other carbon-based materials.

Responsibilities

• Activities revolve around production support on equipment issues, process upsets, and product quality assessments
• Support production in establishing procedures to ensure stable and safe operation with consistent product quality
• Develop and manage work package timelines and budgets to find product performance improvements
• Develop and define process and procedures to establish a capable coating process for existing and new product designs
• Support operation of the CVD department concerning process engineering activities, i.e. work in response to specific quality issues or for process optimization such as reduce scrap/lower cost
• Provide process/equipment analysis and data collection supporting complaint and COPQ events
• Establish effective metrology systems to properly control key product quality metrics
• Utilize measurement system analyses to assess metrology capability against required tolerances
• Implement and control effective SPC charting for key product metrics
• Define OCAPs (Out of Control Action Plans) for process failures to facilitate operation team's response
• Lead and participate in SPS (Structured Problem Solving) activities to identify root causes for product and process failure events utilizing 5-why, 8D, Fishbone, C&E matrix, and other tools
• Support six-sigma and continuous development activities across the site
• Involvement in areas other than coating will be required to fully understand and complete overall job responsibilities (VOG, Graphitization, Machining, Quality/Inspection, etc.)

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent technical discipline
• Prior experience with CVD/CVI processing
• Experience in MOCVD, LED, Epitaxial processing preferred
• Experience with graphite and general ceramic materials
• Proficiency in MS Office applications with expert knowledge of Excel, formulas, macros, VBA coding and data analysis
• Ability to apply statistical methodology to establish process capability
• Advanced problem-solving skills
• Familiarity with materials characterization and physical property testing
