Process Engineer
About the role
The Plant Process Engineer supports the quarry, crushing and screening, and vessel loading production units at the Port Inland, Cedarville, and Drummond Island sites. Leads the development of processes, procedures, and tools associated with the stone process to reduce production cost and improve efficiency while ensuring quality products, respecting environmental initiatives, and prioritizing safety. Responsible for continuous improvement and optimization of all systems and resources, performing root cause analysis to determine appropriate corrective actions.
Actively engages plant management and the hourly workforce to align with all plant maintenance and operational departments. Develops strong interpersonal relationships and works constructively across organizational boundaries to resolve production and process barriers. The successful candidate can be located in the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan between the Gulliver, Cedarville, or Drummond Island communities.
Responsibilities
- Identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies, develop action plans, execute them, and assess results.
- Attend daily meetings with operators and team leaders; partner with the site management team to provide daily instructions for production expectations, identify barriers experienced during shifts, and communicate within the operation.
- Optimize proactive preventative/predictive maintenance programs.
- Provide technical support to production, maintenance, environmental, and quality teams.
- Monitor reliability of processes to define paybacks for improvements.
- Perform inspections during major outages and prepare shutdown reports.
- Document problems related to processes or systems as observed or reported by production.
- Review results with the plant team to initiate, recommend, provide, and/or implement solutions.
- Conduct process and energy audits to identify opportunities for cost savings.
- Monitor stone quality, size, and gradation and their impact on quality.
- Prepare and maintain Standard Operating Procedures and manuals.
- Interface with vendors and consultants on proposals for maintenance systems.
- Train operational personnel.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering, Minerals Processing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience in Root Cause Analysis and troubleshooting.
- Industry background in manufacturing related to mining, paper mills, steel plants, refractory, heavy equipment fabrication, stone processing, or cement plants; lime and cement experience is preferred.
- Positive and proactive attitude with high initiative and the ability to perform with minimal supervision.
- Able and willing to spend the majority of time in the plant with operators, maintenance personnel, and contractors; able to communicate production and process plans effectively.
- Able to travel to other sites and regions as needed.
- Good technical aptitude and analytical skills.
- Detail- and process-oriented with strong problem-resolution abilities.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to support a continuous improvement environment and change management initiatives.
