Process Control Project Engineer

About the Role

The Process Control Engineer provides engineering services for all physical, chemical, and biological processes throughout the treatment plant, collection system, outfall, and remote pump stations. Responsibilities include conducting studies and experiments related to plant operations, permit compliance, and water quality monitoring, as well as developing and maintaining quality controls for operational data.

Additional duties involve transitioning analytical and operational data to the process computer, improving plant performance through operator-level research, and examining and refining operating policies for unit processes. The role also includes preparing technical research reports, instructing operational personnel on sampling programs, analyzing water and wastewater samples, and maintaining field sampling equipment.

The engineer will interface with engineering consultants, review drawings and specifications, and act as a liaison during construction.

Responsibilities

• Conduct studies and experiments involving plant operations, permit compliance, and water quality monitoring.
• Develop and maintain quality controls for daily operational data.
• Draft and plot graphs and charts; transition analytical and operational data to the process computer.
• Conduct operator-level research to improve plant performance.
• Examine and improve operating policies for specific unit processes or operations.
• Prepare and write technical research reports and studies.
• Instruct and monitor operational personnel to establish and maintain sampling programs.
• Analyze off-site and on-site water and wastewater samples.
• Maintain field sampling and monitoring equipment.
• Interface with engineering consultants, review drawings and specifications, and act as a liaison during construction.

Requirements

• Understanding of treatment processes.
• Ability to analyze, interpret, and evaluate engineering problems and express findings quantitatively.
• Proficiency in applying engineering principles and techniques to work assignments and preparing clear, concise reports.
• Knowledge of programmable logic control (PLC) software and ability to read design drawings and instrumentation diagrams.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
• Valid New Jersey driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science degree in one of the following fields: environmental engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, software engineering, systems engineering, or computer science with a specialization in computer software engineering.
• Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in wastewater treatment systems or process design.
• S2 or C2 license issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) (or actively pursuing, defined as taking the associated State license exam at least 2 times per year until obtained).

Physical Demands

• Ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation, including sitting, standing, walking, climbing (including ladders), kneeling, lifting up to 25 lbs., carrying, reaching, pushing, pulling, using a keyboard and tools, and maintaining hearing and visual acuity.
• Must qualify for entry into confined spaces while wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE), such as canister and dust masks, and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), in compliance with PVSC’s Facial Hair Grooming Policy.

Working Conditions

Workers are employed in conditions associated with a wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system, including both indoor and outdoor environments. Year-round access by boat to area water bodies and use of a sampling truck in various weather conditions may be required.

All applicants must meet the NJ First Act residency requirements.

Pay

The expected base pay range for this position is $112,126 to $154,439. The specific salary offered may be influenced by the candidate’s relevant experience, qualifications, education, training, and formal credentials.
