About the Role
Provides direct patient care to practice patients in both office and Ambulatory Surgical Center (ASC) settings. Responsibilities include entering patient intake and provider orders into the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), requesting medical records, utilizing the pharmacy drug monitoring program as directed by providers, recording vital signs and medical history, collecting patient information, and facilitating patient flow. Complies with measures to assure that patient/customer satisfaction results are consistently maintained.
Responsibilities

- Assist in bringing patients to pre-op, recovery, and transporting for discharge.
- Assist patients with medical forms, as necessary.
- Exercise confidentiality in all areas, abiding by HIPAA rules and regulations.
- Accurately complete applicable paperwork; ensure patient medical records are complete.
- Prepare all forms and requisitions as instructed by the provider.
- Create and maintain a positive atmosphere of customer service, teamwork, mutual respect, professionalism, and accountability.
- Verify patient information by interviewing patient; recording medical history; confirming purpose of visit and patient ID.
- Answer telephones in a professional manner and deliver messages promptly.
- Return patient calls in a timely manner.
- Maintain and improve current skills and knowledge by attending relevant meetings, classes, trainings, and keeping certifications current.
- Adhere to Infection Control, Safety, and OSHA standards as specified by State and Company standards.
- Maintain knowledge of, and comply with, State, Company, and any other applicable policies and procedures.
- Assist nursing staff with obtaining and recording vital signs, pregnancy tests, and glucometer checks.
- Verify patient history information and take detailed history when indicated; inform nursing staff and physician of results.
- Make frequent rounds on patients in pre-op and recovery to provide for any other needs prior to discharge.
- Perform daily, weekly, and monthly safety and equipment checks.
- Daily review upcoming cases and notify nurse of any potential issues.
- Review schedule daily and assist with office procedures to help maintain patient flow and accuracy of scheduled procedures.
- Assist with inventory and order supplies for all procedures in the ASC, as directed.
- Set up the sterile field on the Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, medications, and equipment needed for procedures.
- Position the patient for procedures, establish the sterile field, and drape the patient for procedures.
- Assist providers by passing instruments and supplies to them and holding retractors (as needed) during procedures.
- Adhere to all federal, state, and nursing regulations and protocols, including patient safety procedures such as verification of patient identification prior to procedures.
- Initiate/participate in a time-out immediately prior to the start of any procedure to ensure correct patient, procedure, site, and side, and that there are no additional concerns.
- Identify every patient with two identifiers: full name and date of birth; document this information in the Procedure Safety Checklist, including the time of the time-out.
- Sterilize and break down procedure room after each patient; ensure procedure room is cleaned prior to the beginning of a procedure.
- Keep rooms clean and stocked with supplies; maintain stock of medicines and supplies as necessary; advise Office Manager when replacements are needed.
- Sterilize and clean instruments used in examinations and/or procedures; maintain a clean and hygienic environment.
- Monitor personal and provider staff task buckets in the EMR.
- Operate, sterilize, and maintain necessary equipment, including but not limited to the autoclave and RFA machine.
- Assist the physician with use of the C-Arm.
- Accurately maintain daily/monthly record keeping of radiation logs.
- Accurately complete and maintain all applicable records and logs (e.g., radiation, spore testing, equipment, medical records).
- Properly maintain examination/procedure rooms, recovery areas, nurse’s stations, and all other clinical areas.
- Start IV as needed after competency skills check-off.
- Instruct patients in simple procedures/tests and dispense appropriate educational materials (clinical office only).
- Relay provider orders to the patient (clinical office only).
- Prepare, clean, and maintain all clinical equipment (clinical office only).
- Draw up injections to be administered (clinical office only).
- Verify that radiological and laboratory records are received and in the patient chart; if not, take necessary steps to obtain the records (clinical office only).
- Fit patients for durable medical equipment (DME) and complete all applicable paperwork, as directed (clinical office only).
- Obtain prior authorizations for radiology and/or prescriptions, as needed (clinical office only).
- Label specimens accurately and distribute them to the appropriate personnel to ensure specimen integrity (clinical office only).
- Process specimens and prepare them for shipping (clinical office only).
- Maintain lab area with ample supplies and in a clean and safe condition (clinical office only).
- Follow test requirements of laboratory and procure unaltered urine specimen for testing (clinical office only).
- Check work e-mail on a regular basis throughout the workday.
- Participate in and complete all required trainings and in-services.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Knowledge of Internet and Microsoft Office software (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Outlook).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including exceptional customer service.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with doctors, clinical staff, co-workers, and the public.
- Ability to work individually as well as within a team.

- If working in an ASC, proof of annual influenza vaccination (must wear a procedure mask if refusing the flu vaccine).
- Completion of two (2)-step PPD (NE staff) OR annual PPD (SE staff).
- Completion of all regulatory competencies in accordance with working in the ASC.
- Within the first ninety (90) days of employment as a Medical Assistant with C-Arm, completion of C-arm competencies.
- Reliable transportation; travel for this position may be required up to 80%.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of a Nurse Aide, Medical Assistant, or EMS training program, with current Nurse Aide certification, Medical Assistant certification, or EMS Licensure.
- One (1) year of prior experience working in a medical practice.
- One (1) year of prior experience working with an Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Three (3) months of prior experience assisting in the use of a C-Arm machine.
- Surgical Tech certification.
- C-Arm Tech certification.
- One (1) year of prior experience as a Patient Care Tech in an Ambulatory Surgery Center/Operating Room setting.
Pay
Pay Range: $20.00/hr - $23.00/hr

This position is non-exempt (hourly) and eligible for overtime pay in accordance with applicable law. Overtime is not guaranteed. This position is not eligible for bonus, commission, incentive, or shift differential pay.
