Under close supervision and guidance, an individual in this position is expected to become a qualified Firefighter/EMT to provide basic and advanced life support care, perform fire suppression, fire prevention and inspection duties to protect life and property, and promote public safety within the City of Blackfoot’s emergency response area. Due to the emergency nature of this work, hours vary and include weekends and evenings.
Responsibilities
- Respond to fire alarms and assist in emergency and non-emergency operations involving fire, hazardous materials, confined-space rescue, extrication, and technical rescues (high-angle, below-grade, swift-water, trench, collapse).
- Provide emergency medical treatment using modern EMS techniques and advanced first aid.
- Maintain thorough knowledge of the response area, including streets, buildings, water supply, and unusual hazards.
- Operate firefighting vehicles, rescue equipment, portable extinguishers, power tools, hand tools, and forcible-entry tools.
- Clean and inspect equipment and apparatus; report maintenance needs to a superior officer.
- Maintain fire station, equipment, and grounds in a clean and orderly condition.
- Participate in training activities and instruction sessions.
- Conduct public safety education programs, fire prevention demonstrations, and related events.
- Enter inspection and training calls into records management system(s).
- Comply with Departmental, City, County, State, Federal, and other applicable policies, procedures, standards, and safety practices.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Special Knowledge
- Maintain knowledge of current firefighting tactics and strategies for wildland, commercial, residential, airport, flammable/combustible liquids, and vehicle fires.
- Maintain knowledge and skill with firefighting and emergency response vehicles and related equipment.
- Maintain knowledge of the Uniform Fire Code for inspection purposes.
- Obtain and maintain Firefighter 1 Certification within one year of hire.
- Pass all pre- and post-employment written and physical examinations and standards.
- Possess basic mathematical and science principles related to the core functions of the position.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalency.
- At least 18 years of age at the time of application.
- Possess and maintain a valid Idaho Driver’s License.
- Demonstrated ability to work within a command structure, follow orders, and apply guidelines to operational requirements.
- Ability to rapidly learn and utilize emerging technology, electronic and manual equipment.
- Technical competency with emergency response records systems, communications equipment, computer fire applications, and incident reporting procedures.
- Positive attitude with an innovative, flexible, and versatile approach to work; high level of integrity.
- Ability to perform duties accurately and quickly under high stress and time-sensitive deadlines.
- Good judgment in emergency situations; ability to maintain a calm, professional demeanor when lives and property are at risk.
- Clear, concise, and effective oral and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with coworkers and the public under extremely stressful situations.
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
Essential Physical Demands
- Must meet and maintain the physical standards required for firefighter and EMT duties, including but not limited to: lifting, carrying, climbing, crawling, and working in confined spaces.
