Location: Nashville, TN – Department of Correction, Community Supervision, Specialized Caseloads Unit, Davidson County.

Salary: $4,057.00 - $5,078.00 monthly ($48,684.00 - $60,936.00 annually).

Job Type: Full-Time. Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) screening and criminal background check required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and one year of full-time professional experience in probation/parole, counseling, social work, investigative, or legal work.
• Substitution of Experience for Education: Full-time relevant professional experience (including law enforcement) may substitute for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis.
• Substitution of Graduate Course Work for Experience: Graduate course credit in social science, behavioral science, criminal justice, criminology, social work, or law may substitute for up to one year of the required experience (e.g., 36 graduate quarter hours = one year).

Necessary Special Qualifications:

• Must qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons.
• At least 18 years of age and a U.S. citizen.
• Good moral character, as determined by investigation.
• No felony convictions or domestic assault convictions; no dishonorable discharge from the U.S. armed forces.
• Pass physical and psychological evaluations consistent with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
• Pass a pre-employment drug screening and possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
• Complete all prescribed training at the Tennessee Correction Academy and online courses upon appointment.

About the Role

The Probation/Parole Officer 2 (Specialized Caseloads Unit) supervises registered sex offenders on probation or parole. The role involves intensive fieldwork, including home, employment, and community visits, to enhance public safety through structured supervision and offender rehabilitation. Officers receive specialized training in risk-needs assessments, targeted treatment plans, and advanced electronic monitoring tools. The position requires collaboration with law enforcement, treatment providers, and other stakeholders to ensure compliance with legal obligations, including the Tennessee Sex Offender Registration Law. A 1-year probationary performance period is required.

Responsibilities

• Offender Supervision and Case Management:
  • Assist individuals in desisting from criminal behavior using evidence-based supervision strategies.
  • Conduct regular office and field visits (curfew checks, home/employment/school contacts) to assess compliance and support pro-social engagement.
  • Supervise individuals on electronically monitored home detention.
  • Administer drug/alcohol testing, including random screens, to monitor compliance and support recovery.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of supervision contacts, case activity, and interventions.
  • Track caseload activity and prepare monthly/periodic reports.
• Investigations and Reporting:
  • Prepare comprehensive offender records and investigative reports detailing risk factors, supervision strategies, and compliance history.
  • Conduct pre-hearing and pre-release investigations; prepare narrative reports with risk/needs assessments and supervision recommendations.
  • Gather background information using state, local, and federal databases.
  • Testify in court or parole hearings regarding offender history, progress, and compliance.
• Risk Assessment and Rehabilitation Planning:
  • Conduct validated risk/needs assessments using approved tools and motivational interviewing.
  • Develop individualized case plans addressing criminogenic risk factors.
  • Evaluate offender progress and adjust supervision approaches based on risk level and behavior.
  • Encourage skill development and connection to community resources to reduce recidivism.
• Compliance, Enforcement, and Public Safety:
  • Address non-compliance using graduated responses per agency policy.
  • Prepare violation reports and warrants for courts or parole authorities when necessary.
  • Conduct authorized searches of offender residences, vehicles, and persons.
  • Respond to offender complaints/grievances promptly and professionally.
  • Maintain readiness for enforcement functions while prioritizing community safety.
• Interagency and Community Collaboration:
  • Liaise with judges, law enforcement, treatment providers, employers, and victim services to coordinate supervision and reentry efforts.
  • Respond to interstate compact correspondence regarding supervision.
  • Foster a trauma-informed, professional environment for colleagues and justice-involved individuals.
  • Promote partnerships that strengthen accountability, rehabilitation, and public safety.
