Pay

$4,057.00 – $5,078.00 per month ($48,684.00 – $60,936.00 annually)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • One year of full-time professional experience in probation/parole, counseling, social work, investigative, or legal work.
  • Substitution of experience for education: Full-time relevant professional experience (including law enforcement) may substitute for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • Substitution of graduate coursework: Graduate credit in social science, behavioral science, criminal justice, criminology, social work, or law may substitute for up to one year of the required experience (e.g., 36 graduate quarter hours).
  • Must be at least 18 years old and a U.S. citizen.
  • Good moral character, as determined by investigation.
  • No felony convictions or domestic assault convictions; no dishonorable discharge from the U.S. armed forces.
  • Must pass a criminal history disclosure, fingerprint-based background check, physical examination, psychological evaluation, and drug screening.
  • Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license at the time of appointment.
  • Must successfully complete all prescribed training at the Tennessee Correction Academy and any online training upon appointment.
  • Willingness and ability to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons.

About the Role

Under general direction, this position involves professional probation and parole work of average difficulty. The role supervises a caseload of probationers and/or parolees and is the working-level class in the Probation/Parole Officer sub-series.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain offenders' records and reports, including narrative reports of investigations and monthly caseload activities.
  • Conduct searches of offender residences, vehicles, and persons as required by policy.
  • Interview probationers and parolees regularly to evaluate progress and compliance with probation contracts and rehabilitation plans.
  • Conduct pre-hearing and pre-release investigations and testify in court regarding offenders' backgrounds and recommended sentences.
  • Search state, local, and federal databases for incidents and additional information related to offenders.
  • Act as a liaison with judges, court personnel, law enforcement, and other agencies to support probation/parole program goals.
  • Request arrest warrants for non-compliant offenders as required by policy.
  • Use compiled offender information to determine appropriate steps for treatment and develop sanctions for noncompliance.
  • Handle offender complaints and grievances professionally and investigate significant offender and staff-related events.
  • Assist offenders in decision-making processes and use designated assessment tools to determine risk levels and service frequency.
  • Develop transitional accountability plans outlining release requirements, such as office visits, restitution payments, or educational and employment stipulations.
  • Monitor offenders to ensure compliance with release requirements set by policy and procedures.
