PRN Registered Nurse - NICU - Day/Eve/Night

Private NICU rooms available for the sick or pre-term infant. Care for pre-term infants 32 weeks or greater. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and S.T.A.B.L.E. program required. Board Certified Neonatologist and Neonatal Nurse Practitioners on staff.

Schedule

  • PRN – minimum of 24 hours off shift per 6-week schedule
  • 12-hour shifts (day/evening/night)
  • Weekend and holiday shifts as needed
  • Shift and weekend differential eligibility

Responsibilities

  • Implement, direct, and coordinate patient care using the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation
  • Recognize and treat physical and psychosocial changes unique to the age/population served
  • Demonstrate safe medication practice and maintain a professional image
  • Complete chart checks to ensure no missed orders and accurately transcribe physician’s orders
  • Use therapeutic communication skills and assess patient education needs
  • Attend at least 50% of staff/committee meetings and in-services
  • Demonstrate leadership through the nursing process and supervision while maintaining accountability for treatment and patient outcomes
  • Act as a resource person regarding patient care, specialty area, orientation, and teaching of staff
  • Analyze assessment data, identify priority problems, and document on Plan of Care in PCS for patients, families, and significant others
  • Initiate and maintain Intravenous Therapy according to IV standards
  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations and use proper body mechanics
  • Function as a virtual nurse for admissions, discharges, education, documentation, and collaboration with bedside staff
  • Provide care to neonates in the Level II NICU in accordance with age-specific development
  • Monitor and adjust specialized equipment (incubators, ventilators, CPAP, I-STAT analyzer, medication, and enteral feeding devices)
  • Act rapidly and effectively during emergencies using NRP principles
  • Collaborate with the care team to establish priorities and achieve expected outcomes
  • Demonstrate competency in caring for umbilical venous/arterial, PICC, and peripheral intravenous therapy in neonates
  • Collect lab specimens proficiently
  • Maintain certification in NRP and complete iSTAT training as required
  • Provide care and emotional support to neonates and families, including assisting with breastfeeding and education
  • Instruct and educate families to participate in neonate care and discharge planning
  • Provide care to post-partum newborns and coordinate with Family Birthing Services (FBS)
  • Assist neonatologists, advanced practitioners, or pediatricians as needed

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
  • Eligible for or currently licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in Pennsylvania
  • NRP certification required for Level II NICU
  • CPR certification required; ACLS/PALS as applicable to the role
  • Minimum of one year NICU experience within the last five years (for non-trainee positions)
  • For trainee positions: at least 2 years of experience in NICU Level 1, Labor and Delivery, Post-Partum, Nursery, PICU, ICU, ED, or CCU or new graduate RN with practicum/capstone in Labor and Delivery, Nursery, or NICU or experience as a Tech/Aide in Labor and Delivery, Post-Partum, Nursery, or NICU

Qualifications

  • Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills
  • Previous nursing experience in the specialty area preferred
  • Proficiency in cardiac monitor interpretation, conscious sedation, and ACLS as required by the unit
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Clearance and fingerprinting required
  • Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting Training in accordance with Act 31 of 2014 required
