About the Role

This position assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and documents nursing care of patients in accordance with organizational policies and standards of professional nursing practice. The role is accountable for the quality of nursing services delivered by self or others under their direction, utilizing specialized knowledge, judgment, and nursing skills to assess data and plan, provide, and evaluate care appropriate to the physical and developmental age of assigned patients.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses patient physical, psychological, social, spiritual, educational, developmental, cultural, and discharge planning needs.
  • Reviews patient history, physical, diagnostics, and laboratory data; reports abnormal results to physicians and caregivers.
  • Completes assessment and reassessments per policy and patient need.
  • Formulates a realistic, measurable plan of care utilizing assessment data and input from the patient, family, and health team.
  • Initiates and revises the plan of care based on patient-specific needs and medical plans, considering physical, cultural, psychosocial, spiritual, and educational needs.
  • Implements the plan of care through direct patient care, coordination, delegation, and supervision of the health care team, ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Promotes continuity of care through accurate and complete communication with other caregivers.
  • Evaluates patient and family response to care and teaching; revises the plan of care as needed in collaboration with the health care team.
  • Documents assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in the patient record legibly, timely, and in accordance with policy.
  • Provides care based on best evidence available and may participate in research activities within clinical practice.
  • Participates in shared leadership, education, role development, and orientation of personnel, patients, students, families, and visitors.
  • Contributes to excellent patient outcomes through timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and safe care, including participation in professional organizations.
  • May provide relief charge duties, overseeing staff and workflow of the department.
  • Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory, and accreditation requirements.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree or Diploma in Nursing, or higher, required.
  • Current, valid RN license in state of practice, temporary RN license, or compact RN licensure.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications required.
  • PALS certification required within 90 days of start date if assigned to pediatric services.
  • Minimum one-year licensed RN experience in OR (other procedural areas considered with approval).
  • Licensed RN with no OR experience must enroll in PeriOp101 program and complete within 4 months.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional OR or perioperative licensed RN experience is strongly preferred.

Physical Demands

  • Able to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently.
  • Possess physical agility and adequate reaction time to respond quickly to patient care needs.
  • Adequate hearing, visual acuity (including color vision), fine motor skills, and eye-hand coordination.
  • Able to use proper body mechanics to assist patients in ambulating, transferring in and out of bed, chair, or wheelchair.
  • May be required to lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Must use standard precautions due to exposure to blood and bodily fluids.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, and speaking in person or on the telephone.
  • May require periodic use of computer, phone, and general office equipment.

Work Environment

Interacts with all levels of staff, physicians, patients, families, external health care institutions, community providers, agencies, and clergy. Synthesizes and prioritizes data from multiple sources to support patient and family responses to health status changes. Works in a typical direct patient care environment.
