PRN Hospital Pharmacist

About the role

Health System Pharmacy at Cardinal Health coordinates pharmacy operations serving acute care hospitals, hospital retail customers, ambulatory care, alternate site facilities, oncology and cardiology practices, and retail customers. The team delivers customized pharmacy program solutions that reduce costs and improve patient care quality for hospitals, health systems, and integrated healthcare providers. Responsibilities include consulting with and advising healthcare teams on prescribed medications, supplies, and related processes.

Cardinal Health manages the pharmacy at PAM Health Rehab Hospital of Aiken and is recruiting a PRN Pharmacist to work as needed, covering PTO/vacation, sick time, and on-call after hours. The facility operates Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

Responsibilities

• Applies expert knowledge of drugs and related protocols to verify physician orders using the pharmacy information system; checks drug and dose against patient issues and addresses automated alerts regarding drug type, dose, and other metrics.
• Supervises Pharmacy Technicians to ensure compliant and efficient pharmacy operations; reviews all technician work in accordance with State Boards of Pharmacy regulations and provides guidance on complex prescriptions, automation systems, orders, and other issues.
• Adjusts dosages based on established protocols, ensuring appropriateness for the patient’s condition and other medications; completes clinical tasks related to antimicrobial stewardship.
• Educates patients on proper medication use and expected effects, especially for those using multiple medications, starting new regimens, or being discharged.
• Manages narcotics and inventory control and compliance, including documentation, checklists, and auditing outdated medication where technicians are not permitted.
• Contacts nurses and physicians to verify orders and obtain additional information as necessary.
• Assists the Pharmacy Director in maintaining accreditation and implementing operational changes such as new systems or procedure adjustments.

Qualifications

• Licensed, “good standing” pharmacist in the state of South Carolina.
• In-patient hospital pharmacy experience preferred.
• Flexibility to work various shifts and on-call as needed.
• IV experience preferred.
• Ability to hear, write, and speak clearly to communicate with customers and healthcare professionals.
• Strong customer service skills.
• Manual dexterity required for occasional reach, lifting, and holding of small objects.
• Computer savvy to learn and operate multiple pharmacy information systems.
• Ability to occasionally lift up to 35 pounds.
• Ability to bend, reach, stoop, lift, and stand for entire shift.
• Vendor credentialing may be required.

Pay

Anticipated hourly range: $50.10 – $71.70. Pay is determined by multiple factors including geographical location, relevant education, experience, skill, and internal pay equity.
