About the role

The CRNA administers anesthesia for all types of surgical cases in various settings in accordance with their expertise. They administer anesthesia in four general categories: pre-anesthetic preparation and evaluation, anesthesia induction, maintenance and emergence, post-anesthetic care, peri-anesthetic and clinical support functions.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains and administers the anesthetic, adjuvant drugs, and fluid necessary to manage the anesthetic.
  • Maintains the patient's physiologic homeostasis and corrects abnormal responses to anesthesia or surgery.
  • Selects, applies, and inserts appropriate non-invasive and invasive monitoring modalities for collecting and interpreting patient physiological data.
  • Manages patient's airway and pulmonary status using endotracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, pharmacological support, respiratory therapy, or extubating.
  • Releases or discharges patients from a post-anesthesia care area, provides post-anesthesia follow-up evaluation and care related to anesthesia side effects or complications.
  • Orders, initiates, or modifies pain relief therapy through the utilization of drugs, regional anesthetic techniques, or other accepted pain relief modalities, including epidural analgesia.
  • Responds to emergency situations by providing airway management, administering emergency fluids or drugs, or using basic or advanced cardiac life support techniques.
  • Provides clinical support services outside of the operating room, including but not limited to radiology, endoscopy, emergency department, or invasive labs.
  • Provides consultation and implementation of respiratory and ventilatory care upon request or referral for these services.
  • Identifies and manages emergency situations, including the initiation or participation in cardiopulmonary resuscitation that involves airway maintenance, ventilation, tracheal intubation, pharmacologic, cardiopulmonary support, management of blood, fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance.
  • Performs clinical and didactic teaching, supervision, and evaluation of students and interdepartmental liaising.
  • Is a member of departmental committees and participates in research.

Requirements

  • Licensed as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).
  • Licensed to practice professional nursing and advanced practice nursing in Louisiana.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support Health Care Provider, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support certifications.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), and completion of an approved CRNA program. Experience in a hospital setting is preferred.

Skills

Strong clinical skills, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities are essential. Proficiency in medical terminology, pharmacology, and anesthesia techniques is required. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are also important.
