Private Development Engineer III/ IV

Salary: $83,000 - $108,000 (commensurate with experience and placement level).

About the Role

This position involves assignments requiring independent evaluation, selection, and application of standard civil engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, with adaptations and modifications to existing plans or specifications. The role serves as a primary point of contact with the public, developers, consultants, and contractors, providing technical guidance and resolving complex project-related issues.

At the Civil Engineer III level, performance requires a professional civil engineer competent in conventional aspects of civil and traffic engineering, with the ability to coordinate the work of engineers, draftspersons, technicians, and others.

At the Civil Engineer IV level, the role demands progressive experience, intensive and diversified knowledge of civil engineering principles, and the ability to make independent decisions on engineering problems. This level involves representing the City in public meetings, planning and coordinating work, and using advanced techniques to modify and extend engineering theories and practices. Coordination of consultants, contractors, and staff is required.

Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive reviews of private development construction plans, technical reports, and supporting documentation to ensure compliance with applicable standards, regulations, and engineering principles.
• Identify and resolve design and construction issues, and independently coordinate project activities with consultants, contractors, developers, and other stakeholders throughout project planning and construction.
• Serve as a primary point of contact with the public, developers, consultants, and contractors, providing technical guidance and resolving complex project-related issues.
• Exercise independent judgment in planning, prioritizing, and completing assignments, analyzing technical information to develop practical solutions, and perform most work with minimal supervision.
• Receive guidance on unusual or complex matters and obtain supervisory approval for major project recommendations and proposed plans.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university.
• Minimum of five (5) to eight (8) years of progressively responsible civil engineering experience.
• Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification or Professional Engineer (PE) license.
• Civil Engineer IV candidates must possess a Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Michigan or be able to obtain one within six (6) months of hire.
• Valid driver’s license.
