Engineer, Development III
About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Development Engineer to support the growth initiatives of Southwire’s Telecom market vertical, specifically Hybrid cables for communication networks and optical fiber technologies. Under limited direction, the successful candidate will perform complex engineering assignments requiring in-depth knowledge of optical fiber, electrical, mechanical, and industrial engineering. This role acts as an optical fiber expert and Core Team Leader/Project Manager, leading a cross-functional team including Product Management, Operations, Certification, and Test Labs to design, manufacture, and commercialize new products. The candidate will adhere to a Stage Gate development process to ensure products meet the highest standards of safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities
- Function as principal investigator or lead a group of engineers to investigate problems, develop solutions, and prepare recommendations and reports.
- Execute Research & Development projects, including planning, timeline forecasting, budget management, and logistics coordination using the Stage Gate process.
- Collaborate with internal and external partners such as manufacturing plants, test laboratories, customers, vendors, consultants, and contractors.
- Lead projects with autonomy and accountability, planning milestones, anticipating lead times, and ensuring timely completion.
- Drive leading-edge research, product enhancement, and process improvement in a time-constrained, market-driven environment.
- Recommend projects, product improvements, or cost reductions.
- Represent the group in meetings and conferences; interact with customers to provide training seminars, resolve technical issues, and develop action plans.
- Deliver formal technical presentations to customers, industry forums, and conferences.
- Provide technical direction and minor administrative guidance to a small group of engineers and assistants.
- Support manufacturing throughout the production cycle, including creating testing plans, design handover meetings, and troubleshooting on the manufacturing floor.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a related field (required).
- 5+ years of experience with fiber wire and cable product development and manufacturing support.
- Master’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial, or Chemical Engineering (preferred).
- 10+ years of relevant experience (preferred).
- Experience with standards such as UL, CSA, and others.
- Certifications such as CFOT, CFOS/T, CFOS/S, CFOS/C, or CFOS/FC (preferred).
