Principal Roadway Engineer

About the Role

GFT is seeking an Office Leader/Senior Project Manager with experience in roadway engineering and project management to join our Transportation Team in Tallahassee, Florida. This hybrid role requires regular attendance at our Tallahassee office and offers the opportunity to grow from a technical focus into management and business-related functions. You will engage in transformative projects that enhance transportation infrastructure and improve community connectivity, working on highways, bridges, traffic engineering, and more.

Responsibilities

• Project Management
  • Perform project management and engineering tasks related to the planning and design of transportation facilities such as freeways, arterials, intersections, railroads, and drainage.
  • Be part of a Design Team producing plans, specifications, cost estimates, and schedules for transportation construction projects.
  • Oversee and prepare engineering reports, calculations, analysis, and technical documentation for design projects.
  • Attend meetings and interact with clients; strong written and oral communication skills are imperative.
  • Provide direction and oversight to project team members for roadway, traffic, drainage, and site design projects and reports.
  • Answer questions and review shop drawings during the construction phase of projects.
• Team Oversight
  • Support and develop team members through regular status meetings and in-person interactions.
  • Develop and manage labor projections and facilitate resourcing for the team.
  • Review and oversee project budgets.
  • Ensure quality expectations are met through QA/QC processes.
  • Develop contingency and team member transition plans, identify successors, and provide mentorship.
  • Communicate effectively with Division Leaders, Area Business Managers, and other leaders within the organization.
• Employee Management
  • Create a work environment that retains top talent, provides development opportunities, communicates performance concerns, and supports positive morale.
  • Strategically acquire new talent.
• Financial Responsibilities
  • Lead project management both technically and financially to meet clients’ expectations for quality, timeliness, and budget.
  • Work with team members on project performance and review at-risk projects.
  • Manage and optimize utilization, resolving any issues with team members.
• Business Development
  • Develop and maintain client relationships.
  • Participate in proposal and RFQ processes (Go/No-Go decisions).
  • Provide input and support for Client Service Team Meetings.
  • Coordinate with Division Leaders to ensure optimal utilization and workload distribution.
• Technical Design
  • Design and prepare plan submittals for highway and arterial roadway design, complex intersection design, local roadways, site design, bridge replacement/rehabilitation, traffic design, and drainage design for FDOT and various municipal agencies.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related technical field.
• At least 15+ years of design and project management delivery experience on heavy transportation infrastructure projects.
• Experience meeting operational business goals, client management, win strategies, and bid preparation.
• Proven track record of successful delivery for road/highway projects according to FDOT standards, including conventional and design/build project execution.
• Professional Engineering License in the State of Florida.

Pay

The salary range for this role is $150,000 - $200,000, dependent upon experience and geographic location.

Schedule

Core business hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. This is a full-time position.
