Principal Product Manager, Reporting
About the role
The Reporting team at Gusto is seeking a high-autonomy, entrepreneurial Product Manager to drive the development of AI-native reporting capabilities for small business owners. Reporting is a critical experience that provides clear visibility into payroll, benefits, and spend data.
Responsibilities
- Drive the strategy and roadmap end-to-end, setting the strategic direction for Reporting and owning the roadmap across web, mobile, and embedded experiences.
- Define the vision for how traditional reports and AI-driven answers work together, connecting to Gusto's broader AI transformation and giving everyone a coherent picture of where we're going.
- Ship customer-facing value every cycle by delivering real improvements that customers notice and use, balancing fixing the basics and with bigger, future swings.
- Partner with other product teams on real use cases, working hand-in-hand with app teams like Pay and Benefits to deliver reporting capabilities end-to-end through real customer journeys.
- Drive the data infrastructure forward by bringing rigor and clear prioritization to the ongoing data migration work, ensuring back-end progress translates into customer-facing capability on a timely basis.
- Set up and track the right metrics, defining leading indicators for reporting quality and customer satisfaction, using data to drive continuous improvement, and communicating progress honestly to stakeholders.
- Raise the bar on collaboration by working closely with engineering, design, and data partners to build a team that operates with speed and quality, treating partner product teams as customers and giving them a clear path forward.
Requirements
- Customer obsession: Understanding how small businesses use data to make decisions, staying close to customers through direct research and indirect feedback loops, and using insights to sharpen priorities.
- Real AI fluency: Using AI tools in daily work, understanding AI-native reporting, and having experience with AI-powered product features or data experiences.
- Bias toward shipping: Setting short, clear milestones, moving fast on near-term customer improvements, and using staged rollouts and learning plans to balance platform work with customer-facing progress.
- Technical fluency in data: Comfortable in conversations about data infrastructure, pipelines, data models, APIs, and trade-offs between migration approaches, and understanding the operational reality of back-end platform maturity and front-end customer experience.
- Cross-functional partnership: Treating partner teams as one of the most important customer groups, understanding their needs, giving them a clear path forward, and making it easy to build on what you've created.
- Clear, direct communication: Telling a simple, compelling story about a complex system, giving stakeholders honest, specific progress updates, escalating issues when necessary, and making it easy for people at any level to understand where Reporting is going and why it matters.
- Strategic clarity: Holding the near-term and long-term at the same time, building a multi-year vision that connects to Gusto's AI transformation, sequencing the work so that every cycle delivers meaningful customer value on the path to that vision, and knowing when to go narrow and when to open up scope.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of hands-on product management experience, with at least some of that time spent on data products, analytics tools, reporting platforms, or infrastructure products where internal or external customers were a primary consideration.
- Demonstrated track record of shipping customer-facing improvements at pace, with things customers notice and use.
- Experience with AI-powered product features or data experiences: building them, scoping them, evaluating them, or working closely enough on them that you understand the operational reality.
- Strong cross-functional collaboration skills with engineering, design, and data partners.
- Experience in environments where back-end platform maturity and front-end customer experience have to be balanced and advanced simultaneously.
