About the role

The Principal Product Manager, Monetization at Upstart will partner with Machine Learning to optimize systems that clear Upstart's marketplace. They will design experiments to test ideas, define and hit goals for the entire Upstart marketplace, and ensure customers pay fairer, more competitive fees while growing revenue and trust.

Responsibilities

  • Own fee and pricing mechanisms for Upstart's loan products, directly shaping what customers pay and what Upstart earns.
  • Use competitive and customer insight to find fee and pricing improvements, translating insights into sharper models and rules.
  • Set the fee strategy and roadmap in partnership with ML, Risk, Legal/Compliance, Finance, and Engineering across multiple product lines.
  • Ensure all teams are aligned as priorities shift, prioritizing what to prioritize, why, and when.

Requirements

  • 5-10 years experience in a marketplace product management role, with success leading an engineering team.
  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate with all levels of the organization.
  • Strong background in economics, econometrics, statistics, or operations research.
  • Experience operating in a regulated pricing environment, such as lending, insurance, or financial services.
  • Strong experiment design and analysis skills, including offline simulation, quasi-experimental methods, competitive benchmarking.
  • Track record using data/AI tools to surface competitive or customer insight that changed a pricing or fee strategy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with pricing/revenue optimization techniques like elasticity modeling, revenue management, brand impact feedback loop.
  • Background in consumer lending, fintech, or capital markets products.
  • Strong background in finance, particularly in understanding how fee changes affect unit economics and investor/funding economics.
  • Experience in designing and analyzing experiments (A/B testing, offline simulations, metrics-driven decisions).
