About the Role

The Principal Platform Engineer is a seasoned and technical leader who will create and redesign broad technical infrastructure and information systems that define how servers, networks, and storage systems work together to support the needs of the organization. This position is located in Springfield, MO and is not open to remote work.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and oversee infrastructure developments and maintenance to ensure business requirements can be met.
  • Drive advances in technologies and architectures to increase the value delivered by technology and digital capabilities, either through improvements to the efficiency of the technology environment or through those that reduce the total cost of technology operations.
  • Recommend and participate in activities related to the design, development, and maintenance of the digital capabilities within the enterprise architecture.
  • Create/manage project storyboards/viewpoints that articulate project requirements and lead to successful implementation of work.
  • Elicit complex project requirements using interviews, document analysis, workshops, and workflow analysis to express requirements in terms of target user roles and goals.
  • Document complex "as is" and "to be" processes and describe the changes required to migrate to the "to be" capability.
  • Explore and develop a detailed understanding of external developments or emerging issues and evaluate their potential impact on the organization.
  • Conduct complex feasibility studies from technological and organizational perspectives and document findings to complete cost-benefit analysis on implementing changes.
  • Support Information Security in detecting and analyzing security incidents, including attacks, breaches, and identified vulnerabilities, and remediate security gaps.
  • Maintain and renew a deep knowledge of the organization's policies, procedures, and relevant regulatory codes to ensure compliance.
  • Monitor and review performance and behaviors to identify and resolve noncompliance with organizational standards and policies.
  • Recommend technical developments to improve the quality of the infrastructure platform.
  • Develop own capabilities through training, coaching, and external professional accreditation.
  • Maintain an in-depth understanding of technology, external regulation, and industry best practices.
  • Develop business cases to quantify costs, justify project investment, and identify return on investment.
  • Use the organization's formal development framework to identify team development needs and provide coaching to others.
  • Design systems providing fault isolation and resolution for complex challenges.
  • Design and monitor the quality of system and component tests and respond to user emails to diagnose and correct performance issues.
  • Contribute to the continued improvement of Infrastructure Automation tooling and processes.
  • Participate in after-hours support, including on-call responsibilities.
  • Contribute to Knowledge Base articles and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Participate in the onboarding and training of new team members.

Requirements

  • Determine and analyze trends from data to assist in decision-making.
  • Understand business context, needs, rules, architecture, and organizational structure to document current processes.
  • Express user needs in terms of business requirements and conduct build or buy analyses.
  • Develop an effective change strategy based on gap analyses and enterprise readiness assessment results.
  • Conduct gap analysis between current and future states.
  • Design, execute, and report on systems/service tests to ensure application functionality.
  • Interpret, contribute to, or lead business case creation to quantify costs and justify investment.
  • Create and review reports for various audiences.
  • Develop and execute architectures, policies, and practices for managing information lifecycle needs.
  • Work directly with Architecture in developing an enterprise readiness assessment.
  • Adopt solutions to automate and manage multiple applications and functions within an organization.
  • Manage and administer infrastructure components such as compute, storage, cloud, network, observability, and tooling/automation.
  • Proficiently navigate and manage private and public cloud-based infrastructure, including virtual machines, networks, storage, and services.
  • Experience with Infrastructure Automation technologies, such as Ansible, Puppet, or Terraform.
  • Scripting and/or programming experience with languages such as Bash, PowerShell, or Python.
  • Ability to delegate and provide clear communication for successful task completion.
  • Directly contribute to quarterly and yearly platform roadmapping exercises.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with CI/CD tooling.
  • Experience with managing containerized infrastructure, such as Kubernetes, Docker, and Cloud Run.
  • Experience designing and deploying cloud platforms.
  • Experience in developing Enterprise standards supporting global workloads across private and public cloud providers.
  • Experience with cloud cost management, utilizing reporting tools and planning tools.

Education & Experience

Master's Degree or equivalent level of experience. Substantial general work experience (6 to 12 years) together with comprehensive job-related experience in own area of expertise. Managerial experience of planning and managing resources (2 to 5 years).
