Principal or Senior Principal Mechanical Engineer (SkillBridge)

About the role
This position is part of the Northrop Grumman SkillBridge Program, an approved Department of Defense initiative for service members preparing for civilian careers. Participants gain valuable civilian work experience during their last 6 months of service (up to 180 days) while continuing to receive military compensation and benefits. The program is open to all ranks and experience levels.
SkillBridge participants will work on-site in Annapolis, MD, supporting a 40-hour workweek in an entry to mid-level career path, with the potential to convert to a full-time opportunity upon completion.
Clearance: A current/active U.S. Government Top Secret clearance is required, with the ability to obtain a TS/SCI with CI polygraph. Travel: None. Relocation assistance: Not available.
Responsibilities
- Concept development, problem-solving, technical planning, design development, and integration & testing of undersea hardware.
- Translate customer requirements into systems solutions while acknowledging technical, schedule, and cost constraints.
- Collaborate in a team environment, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously.
- Develop engineering processes, procedures, and documentation for manufacturing, with an understanding of design for manufacturing practices.
- Support small to medium production quantities.
- Gain hands-on experience through professional development, networking with leadership, and training on Northrop Grumman’s leadership principles, company history, customer engagement, and core job responsibilities.
Requirements
- Must meet SkillBridge eligibility criteria:
- Served at least 180 days on active duty.
- Within 12 months of separation or retirement with an honorable discharge.
- Completed TAPS/TGPS (Transition Assistance Program).
- Attended or participated in an ethics brief within the last 12 months.
- Received written authorization from a Unit Commander (first O-4/Field Grade commander in chain of command) to participate.
- Ability to work on-site at the Annapolis, MD campus.
- Proficiency in common engineering design, production, analysis, and office tools.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Qualifications
Principal Mechanical Engineer:
- BS degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Ocean Engineering, or equivalent STEM field with a minimum of 5 years of experience, or an MS degree with 3 years of experience.
Senior Principal Mechanical Engineer:
- BS degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Ocean Engineering, or equivalent STEM field with a minimum of 8 years of experience, or an MS degree with 6 years of experience, or a PhD with 4 years of experience.
Skills
- Experience in hardware design and design for manufacturing practices.
- Understanding of engineering’s role in supporting small to medium production quantities.
- Ability to comprehend and analyze complex problems and develop solutions.
- Preferred qualifications:
- Proficiency with Siemens NX and Teamcenter.
- Experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
- Experience with undersea vehicle and system design.
- Active TS/SCI clearance with CI polygraph.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple simultaneous projects.
Pay
Primary Level Salary Range: $98,900.00 - $123,600.00
Secondary Level Salary Range: $123,400.00 - $185,000.00
Base salary offers consider factors such as scope/responsibilities of the position, candidate experience, education, skills, and current market conditions. Eligible employees may receive overtime, shift differentials, discretionary bonuses, annual bonuses tied to individual and company performance, and long-term incentives for Vice President or Director positions.
