About the role

Design, develop, troubleshoot and debug software programs for databases and cloud services with emphasis on new extensions to SQL. Implement data structures and algorithms to accelerate query performance. Work on Machine Learning algorithms that improve automation of query processing like automated result cache, automated partitioning, automated clustering and zonemaps.

As a member of the software engineering division, you will take an active role in the definition, design, implementation, and evangelization of new database execution features. You will also be analyzing the performance and scalability of the features and improve them. Work is complex and research-centric, involving application of advanced technical and problem-solving skills in area efficient execution of SQL queries. As a leading individual contributor, you will be providing direction and mentorship as well.

Many of our algorithms have been patented and our work has been published in major conferences. We are responsible for providing scalability of SQL operators for parallel queries and for memory usage. A recent area of interest is vectorized and columnar processing. We extended the SQL language to identify data that is closest match to query vector. We generate optimal query plans for fast data retrieval. We take advantage of new on-disk and in-memory storage formats and hardware caching characteristics to improve joins.

Responsibilities

• Develop and debug software for databases and cloud services, focusing on SQL extensions
• Implement data structures and algorithms to enhance query performance
• Work on Machine Learning algorithms for automated query processing (e.g., result cache, partitioning, clustering, zonemaps)
• Define, design, and evangelize new database execution features
• Analyze and improve performance and scalability of database features
• Provide direction and mentorship as a leading individual contributor
• Optimize SQL operators for parallel queries and memory efficiency
• Explore vectorized and columnar processing techniques
• Extend SQL language capabilities for advanced data matching
• Generate optimal query plans for fast data retrieval
• Leverage new storage formats and hardware caching for performance improvements

Requirements

• BS, MS, or PhD degree in Computer Science or related field
• Proficiency in data structures, algorithms, systems programming, computer architecture, and SQL
• Strong C programming and debugging skills
• Knowledge of parallel processing, thread programming, concurrency control, and scalability
• Strong communication skills (written and oral)
• Proactive initiative and critical reasoning abilities
• Background in database internals

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of database systems and SQL query execution (joins, aggregation, transactions, re-partitioning, fragmentation)
• Understanding of database systems theory, including SQL query optimization (join ordering, query transformations)
• Familiarity with internal database components (buffer cache, heap manager, B-Tree indexes, columnar storage, latches, locks)
• Knowledge of operating systems (concurrency control, multi-threading, inter-process communication)

Pay

Hiring range in USD: $114,600 - $234,600 per year. May be eligible for bonus, equity, and compensation deferral.
