Principal Data Analyst
About the role
The Principal Data Analyst serves as a trusted analytical partner to Long Term Care Claims Operations leadership, translating complex data into clear, compelling insights that shape strategy and drive outcomes. This role requires deep expertise in Power BI, advanced SQL proficiency, and exceptional data storytelling skills to influence senior leaders.
Responsibilities
- Act as a senior analytical advisor and trusted partner supporting Long Term Care Claims, Customer Service, and Workforce Management (WFM), delivering insights that directly inform strategic and operational decision-making.
- Power BI Development & Best Practices:
- Design, develop, and own scalable Power BI solutions, including datasets, semantic models, reports, and dashboards aligned to enterprise standards.
- Apply and promote Power BI best practices related to: Data modeling and DAX, Performance optimization and efficient query design, Security and role-based access, Workspace governance, lifecycle management, and deployment standards.
- Ensure dashboards and reports are intuitive, well-documented, and optimized for both executive and operational audiences, with a strong focus on data storytelling.
- Serve as a steward of reporting standards, helping prevent ad hoc, duplicative, or inconsistent reporting solutions across teams.
- Advanced Analytics & Insight Generation:
- Lead the development of complex, highly optimized SQL queries to extract, transform, and analyze large, structured datasets.
- Translate ambiguous or complex business questions into well-defined analytical approaches, metrics, and success measures.
- Go beyond descriptive reporting to deliver diagnostic and forward-looking insights, including forecasting, scenario modeling, capacity planning, and cost-benefit analysis.
- Proactively identify emerging trends, performance drivers, risks, and opportunities impacting customer experience, operational efficiency, and financial outcomes.
- Present findings and recommendations to senior and executive leadership, delivering clear, compelling, and actionable data-driven narratives.
- Data Validation & Quality Assurance:
- Validate, reconcile, and certify data sourced from multiple teams, systems, and datasets to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency across reports, dashboards, and analytical outputs.
- Proactively identify data quality issues, anomalies, and inconsistencies, applying strong analytical judgment to uncover root causes and upstream process gaps.
- Partner with source system owners, data engineering, and data governance teams to drive resolution of data issues and prevent recurrence.
- Establish, document, and reinforce data validation standards, controls, and best practices to improve confidence in reporting and analytics.
- Apply trend analysis and variance detection techniques to surface potential data or process risks before they materially impact decision-making.
- Enablement, Upskilling & Support:
- Serve as a subject matter expert and trusted advisor for Power BI usage, data interpretation, and reporting design.
- Upskill business and technical teams through coaching, knowledge sharing, documentation, and informal training.
- Provide troubleshooting and advisory support for Power BI solutions, datasets, and reporting issues, helping teams resolve problems efficiently.
- Foster a culture of data literacy, shared ownership, and continuous improvement across supported teams.
- Mentor junior analysts and raise overall analytical maturity through leadership by example.
- Business Partnership & Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Partner closely with stakeholders across LTC Claims, Customer Service, Operations, Finance, WFM, and other functions to understand priorities and align analytics to business outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with data engineering, analytics, and data governance teams to align reporting with enterprise data strategy and evolving data architecture.
- Cook up and integrate new data sources and evolve existing reporting as business needs change.
- Contribute to complex, cross-functional initiatives where analytics and reporting are critical to success, operating independently while engaging leadership for alignment on high-impact decisions.
Requirements
- Expert-level analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synthesize complex data into clear insights and recommendations.
- Proven ability to present insights and recommendations to senior and executive leadership with confidence and clarity.
- Demonstrated experience translating business needs into technical solutions and actionable analytics.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple complex priorities, and influence.
- Naturally curious, highly analytical mindset with a passion for using data to drive strategy and change.
- Bachelor’s degree in an analytical, technical, or quantitative discipline (e.g., Analytics, Data Science, Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science).
- 6+ years of progressive experience in data analytics or a related field, with demonstrated impact in complex business environments.
- Advanced SQL expertise (Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, or equivalent), including query optimization, complex joins, CTEs, and performance tuning.
- Power BI expert, including data modeling, DAX, visual design best practices, and dashboard storytelling for executive audiences.
- Strong experience working with large, structured datasets using SQL, Excel, and/or Python.
Qualifications
- Nice to have:
- Experience with Databricks or modern cloud-based data platforms (highly relevant but not required).
- Experience with internal Genworth systems or background in the Insurance / Financial Services industry.
- Experience with TIBCO Spotfire, Business Objects, or similar BI tools.
- Experience working with Pega (Platform + Data).
- Master’s degree in a related field.
- Advanced analytics or modeling experience using Python and/or R.
- Experience with data management, data quality, and SQL object creation (views, functions, reusable logic).

Pay
High-Cost Range (includes New York): $135,100-$209,000
