Principal Control Engineer

About the role

You'll be responsible for leading custom automation projects from initial concept through commissioning, serving as the technical point person for controls, robotics, and vision systems. The role combines project leadership, customer interaction, and hands-on engineering, making it a natural step for a senior engineer looking to have more influence without moving fully into management.

Responsibilities

• Lead automation projects from concept through startup and customer acceptance
• Develop PLC, robotics, vision, and controls solutions for custom machinery
• Provide technical leadership and mentor junior engineers
• Support project quoting, estimating, and scope development
• Drive commissioning, troubleshooting, and debug activities
• Work directly with customers throughout the project life cycle
• Collaborate with mechanical and electrical teams to deliver turnkey automation systems
• Travel for installations, startups, FATs, and customer support

Requirements

• 5-10+ years of controls/automation experience
• Strong PLC, robotics, and vision expertise
• System integration or custom machine builder background
• Experience leading projects and guiding other engineers
• Strong customer-facing communication skills
• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
• Experience with commissioning, startup, and project execution
