About the role

This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position requiring onsite presence on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. The role may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Candidates must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package available for qualified candidates).

The Principal Program Engineer oversees engineering and technical disciplines to ensure successful project completion. This role manages multiple initiatives, including planning, establishing criteria, coordinating reviews, and ensuring proper implementation. The position provides oversight and guidance to lower-level engineers and technicians while ensuring project accuracy and quality from conception to completion.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, schedule, coordinate, and monitor assigned engineering projects.
  • Assign responsibilities and mentor project team members.
  • Develop strong partnerships with business stakeholders and understand their objectives.
  • Interact with clients to interpret their needs and represent them in the field.
  • Monitor compliance with applicable codes, standards, QA/QC policies, performance requirements, and specifications.
  • Support Agile project delivery by balancing team performance with tight deadlines.
  • Develop specifications for required project equipment.
  • Review engineering deliverables and initiate corrective actions.
  • Evaluate engineering tasks and implement improvements.
  • Provide technical support and assistance to project managers and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers to improve project execution methods and maintain profitability.
  • Perform quality control reviews of budgets, schedules, plans, and personnel performance; report on project status.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program with seven or more years of experience in a program engineer capacity, or
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from a non-ABET-accredited program plus a Professional Engineering license with seven or more years of experience in a program engineer capacity.

Skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in design and visualization software such as AutoCAD.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office; ability to quickly learn new software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Solid understanding of GD&T principles.
  • Familiarity with applicable rules, regulations, best practices, and performance standards.

Preferred Experience

  • Expertise in engineering and construction contracts, as well as technical documentation for bid and construction packages.
  • Experience overseeing internal and external engineering teams to produce comprehensive construction documents for electric generating plant modifications.
  • Background as a consulting design engineer at a regional or national firm, with in-depth knowledge in civil, structural, or geotechnical design and construction.
  • Experience developing detailed scopes of work for external engineering firms and managing quality, progress, and delivery of engineering and construction documents.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and results-driven, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong communication, coordination, and time management skills; ability to work independently with minimal oversight.
  • Experience managing and directing engineering consultants, including negotiating scope, schedule, and budget.
  • General knowledge of traditional power plant systems and renewable energy systems (preferred but not required).
