About the role
Individual in this role will work in a fast-paced environment and requires the ability to adjust work location(s) to meet the demands of the department and company. Performs routine vehicle and equipment preventive maintenance, minor repairs and some automotive and truck diagnosis. Makes necessary repairs, beyond minor, under the guidance and technical approval of work lead or responsible vehicle mechanic on the replacement of parts of certain components and/or systems of the engine, power train, automatic transmissions, electrical system, cooling system, braking system, fuel system (gasoline and diesel) and steering system.
- Conducts DOT authorized inspections, upon approval and authorization from fleet work lead or supervisor.
- Disassembles and repairs, under the guidance and technical approval of work lead or responsible vehicle mechanic by overhaul and rebuilding, all components of engines, cooling systems, braking systems, fuel systems and steering systems.
- Determine parts needed for the job/task, locate the part and order part as needed.
- Ensure accurate reporting of work performed in the fleet management software.
- Operates automotive and truck shop equipment under the guidance of the work lead or responsible vehicle mechanic such as drill press, engine tune-up meters, laptop computers and related equipment, and battery charger.
- Inspects, lubricates and performs preventive maintenance to vehicles and equipment.
- Diagnoses trouble and make repairs after concurrence with work lead or responsible vehicle mechanic.
- Diagnose trouble and make repairs after concurrence with work lead or responsible vehicle mechanic to some construction equipment.
- Operates electrical test equipment used in the repair and diagnosis of electrical components.
- Operates and drives all types of vehicles or construction equipment to diagnose trouble depending on their driving certifications and approval from BGE Drivers Training.
- Works either in shop environment or outside in all weather conditions, as required.
- This role may require 24-hour shifts during storm support, all levels of storm categories. Some duties include assisting with storm duty staging.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent and two-years work related experience in truck/automotive or equipment repairs, or equivalent training, education and/or experience in a technical or vocational field.
- At least three (3) ASE certifications preferred to include: PM Inspection Truck (T8), and two additional certifications from ASE's truck family. In lieu of ASE certifications, related certifications are acceptable and mechanic must have the ability to obtain and maintain current at least two (2) ASE certifications to include: T8 - PM Inspection, and T4 Air Brake within 1 year of start date.
- Must demonstrate proficiency to perform work to match ASE certifications.
- Mechanic must provide BGE fleet leadership access to their online ASE certification record status.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of BGE Fleet Performance Indicator metrics and how this affects Fleet's performance (preferred).
- Demonstrated ability to meet or exceed industry average mechanic productivity rate and task efficiency rate, as identified by a third-party benchmark vendor.
- Demonstrated ability to understand repair manuals, parts manuals, and computerized maintenance management system.
- Demonstrated ability to operate various shop equipment to include laptop computers, engine diagnostic equipment, voltage meters, tire machine, battery charger, etc.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with peers, leaders and other department employees, as well as with internal customers.
- Valid driver's license and the ability to meet Company driving standards.
- Ability to obtain appropriate Commercial Driver's License, Class A.
- Ability to write, speak, read, comprehend and communicate clearly and accurately in the English language.
- Must be willing and able to work overtime on a regular basis and must be available for callout overtime, if and when required, consistent with the Labor Agreement.
- This position is considered a safety-sensitive function and may be subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing.
