About the Role

This individual will work in a fast-paced environment and may need to adjust work locations to meet department and company demands. The role involves performing routine vehicle and equipment preventive maintenance, minor repairs, and some automotive and truck diagnosis. Under the guidance of a work lead or responsible vehicle mechanic, the individual will handle repairs beyond minor tasks, including replacement of parts for components and systems such as engines, power trains, automatic transmissions, electrical systems, cooling systems, braking systems, fuel systems (gasoline and diesel), and steering systems.

This role may require 24-hour shifts during storm support for all storm categories. Some duties include assisting with storm duty staging.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct DOT authorized inspections, upon approval and authorization from fleet work lead or supervisor.
  • Disassemble and repair, under guidance, components of engines, cooling systems, braking systems, fuel systems, and steering systems by overhaul and rebuilding.
  • Determine, locate, and order parts needed for repairs.
  • Ensure accurate reporting of work performed in fleet management software.
  • Operate automotive and truck shop equipment such as drill presses, engine tune-up meters, laptop computers, and battery chargers.
  • Inspect, lubricate, and perform preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair issues after concurrence with work lead or responsible vehicle mechanic, including some construction equipment.
  • Operate electrical test equipment for repair and diagnosis of electrical components.
  • Operate and drive all types of vehicles or construction equipment to diagnose trouble, depending on driving certifications and approval from BGE Drivers Training.
  • Work in shop environments or outside in all weather conditions as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of work-related experience in truck/automotive or equipment repairs, or equivalent training, education, and/or experience in a technical or vocational field.
  • At least three ASE certifications preferred, including PM Inspection Truck (T8) and two additional certifications from ASE's truck family. In lieu of ASE certifications, related certifications are acceptable, but the mechanic must obtain and maintain at least two ASE certifications (T8 - PM Inspection and T4 Air Brake) within one year of the start date.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency to perform work matching ASE certifications and provide BGE fleet leadership access to their online ASE certification record status.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of BGE Fleet Performance Indicator metrics and their impact on Fleet's performance (preferred).
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet company driving standards.
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License, Class A.
  • Ability to write, speak, read, comprehend, and communicate clearly in English.
  • Willingness and ability to work overtime on a regular basis and be available for callout overtime if required, consistent with the Labor Agreement.
  • This position is considered safety-sensitive and may be subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing.

Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to meet or exceed industry average mechanic productivity rate and task efficiency rate, as identified by a third-party benchmark vendor.
  • Ability to understand repair manuals, parts manuals, and computerized maintenance management systems.
  • Ability to operate various shop equipment, including laptop computers, engine diagnostic equipment, voltage meters, tire machines, and battery chargers.
  • Effective communication with peers, leaders, other department employees, and internal customers.
