Infection Preventionist Job Responsibilities

Collaborate to develop, implement, monitor, and sustain effective Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) strategies across the health system.

Lead and monitor Infection Prevention and Control programs, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and regulatory requirements.

Mentor Infection Preventionists while seeking opportunities for continued professional development and advanced practice.

Apply epidemiologic principles to conduct surveillance, analyze infection trends, and evaluate the effectiveness of surveillance plans.

Conduct infection prevention assessments, environmental rounding, and risk assessments while communicating findings and recommendations to clinical and operational leaders.

Investigate healthcare-associated infections, outbreaks, and clusters to identify opportunities for improvement and implement corrective actions.

Develop and deliver infection prevention education programs tailored to the needs of diverse healthcare audiences.

Utilize infection prevention informatics tools and reporting systems to collect, validate, analyze, and visualize data for regulatory reporting and performance improvement.

Perform data analysis using statistical methods to identify trends, calculate benchmarks, evaluate outcomes, and support quality improvement initiatives.

Develop action plans with measurable goals to reduce infection risks and improve patient safety outcomes.

Collaborate with internal and external partners to promote public health initiatives and improve outcomes across the continuum of care.

Participate in and lead research and quality improvement projects while disseminating evidence-based findings through education, consultation, and clinical practice.

Experience

3–5 years of Infection Prevention, Epidemiology, Public Health, or related healthcare experience.

Previous experience as an Infection Preventionist or Hospital Epidemiologist (preferred).

Experience with healthcare surveillance systems, infection prevention regulations, and quality improvement initiatives (preferred).

Educational & Credential Requirements

Associate Degree (required).

Bachelor's Degree (preferred).

Registered Nurse (RN) (preferred).

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) (preferred).

Master of Public Health (MPH) with a concentration in Epidemiology (preferred).

Certification in Infection Control (CIC) through the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (required within 2 years of hire).
