Preschool Assistant Teacher
About the role
The Y Preschool Assistant Teacher contributes to the Y's mission by assisting the classroom teacher in implementing age-appropriate activities and assignments that align with long-range learning objectives. They are responsible for ensuring the health, welfare, and safety of children enrolled in the program, creating an inclusive environment that supports the social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and creative development of each child.
Responsibilities
- Assist the classroom teacher in planning and executing age-appropriate educational activities
- Ensure the health, welfare, and safety of children in the program
- Create an inclusive environment that supports the social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and creative development of each child
- Work collaboratively with the classroom teacher and other Y associates to implement the Y's mission
Requirements
- Enthusiasm for young children
- Patience and good humor
- Good judgment and a good spirit
- The ability to clearly communicate and effectively listen to children, parents/guardians, members, and other Y associates
- Prior early childhood experience (preferred)
- A high school degree or GED
- 90 hour child care certification and/or Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education

- Ability to work well with children, parents, and other Y associates
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience working with young children is preferred but not required

This policy strictly prohibits any form of abuse, bullying, or harassment and mandates the reporting of suspected mistreatment. Additionally, associates and volunteers must complete training on child abuse prevention and comply with legal reporting requirements to safeguard youth.
