Pre-Op/PACU RN (Per Diem)

About the role

This position provides general nursing care and leadership while working collaboratively with physicians and multidisciplinary caregivers to promote and restore patient health. The role involves providing, delegating, evaluating, and coordinating comprehensive professional nursing care for patients of all ages, genders, cultures, and backgrounds through direct and indirect nursing care utilizing the nursing process. Objectives are determined within the framework of the physician's surgical/medical care plan, patient needs, nursing practice standards, legal regulations, and ambulatory surgery center policies. Additional duties are performed as needed to maintain cost containment, efficiency, and quality of performance.

Schedule

Part-time position. Center is open Monday–Friday, 1st shift.

Responsibilities

• Actively work to promote and maintain an organizational culture that enhances standing as the best place to work and receive care
• Actively engage in staff meetings, department meetings, in-services, educational requirements, etc.
• Maintain cooperative relationships among all caregivers by communicating information, responding to requests, building rapport, and participating in team problem-solving methods
• Provide care to patients utilizing the nursing process to facilitate a positive peri-operative experience
• Establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, families, and friends
• Implement plans to keep patient's family/friends informed of progress if delays occur in any area of care
• Perform peri-operative assessment of the surgical patient based on surgical procedure, type of anesthesia, protocols/policies/procedures, and patient needs
• Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills while assessing patient understanding of the procedure and providing information and emotional support
• Implement proper clinical protocols that ensure patient safety, comfort, and quality of care
• Demonstrate knowledge of the Surgery Center's current policies and procedures
• Implement nursing interventions to assure compliance with established standards, policies, procedures, and best practice
• Anticipate potential patient problems and take measures to prevent occurrences
• Demonstrate willingness to cross-train/float when/if the opportunity arises
• Contribute to meeting fluctuating staffing needs of the department through flexibility in assignments and work schedule
• Assume responsibility for availability of supplies and proper functioning of equipment necessary to provide patient care
• Contribute to supply stocking and necessary housekeeping to facilitate patient care and maintain a safe and clean working environment
• Validate achievement of desired outcomes as evidenced by patient record documentation
• Ensure information relating to patient care is documented according to established procedures
• Communicate verbally and in writing to effectively develop and disseminate the patient's plan of care to all necessary caregivers
• Facilitate continuity of patient care through verbal reports on patient status to the appropriate caregiver receiving the patient
• Protect patients and co-workers by adhering to infection control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations
• Delegate patient care activities to support personnel according to their level of knowledge and expertise
• Demonstrate initiative and collaborate professionally with caregivers in and out of their department
• Promote teamwork by assisting with the precepting of new caregivers
• Identify areas of conflict, intervene effectively, or seek assistance in conflict resolution

Qualifications

• Completion of a minimum of two (2) years education at an accredited School of Nursing to be eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse
• Minimum of one (1) year in Ambulatory Surgery, Outpatient Surgery, or OR nursing
• Currently holds American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) or AHA approved equivalent
• American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required within one (1) year of hire
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification preferred or obtains within six (6) months of request
• Currently holds a nursing license in the state of Massachusetts, free of sanctions and disciplinary actions
• Ability to lift 10 lbs. box overhead; lift and carry 15 lbs.; push/pull 20 lbs. cart
• Ability to lift and carry 25–35 lbs.; push/pull 50–100 lbs. (e.g., empty bed, stretcher)
• Ability to lift and carry 40–50 lbs.; push/pull +/- 150–200 lbs. (patients on bed, stretcher); lateral transfer 150–200 lbs. (patient)
• Ability to lift over 50 lbs.; carry 80 lbs. a distance of 30 feet; push/pull > 200 lbs. (patients on bed, stretcher)

Pay

$48–$66/hr + benefits. Individual pay is based on skills, experience, and other relevant factors.
