Pre-Kindergarten Special Education Paraprofessional
Job Summary
Aid the teacher in working with students to achieve learning objectives, provide physical and medical care, and perform tasks as directed.
Qualifications
- Two years education at an institution of higher learning OR an Associates Degree OR demonstrate knowledge of, and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics through a formal state or local assessment.
- Possess or be able to secure a valid Ohio Education Aide permit from the Ohio Department of Education.
- Attend at least fifteen (15) hours of job-related in-service training each school year.
- Be able to stand and sit for prolonged periods, bend, stoop, push, pull, and lift up to 50 pounds with assistance.
- Have fine motor skills to assist with cutting, pasting, arranging materials, or using manipulatives.
- Have experience in a position requiring independent judgment and discretion.
- Be willing to assist in group or team efforts towards a goal.
- Be able to work with students who have various physical and medical needs.
- Be willing to assist in the cafeteria, accompany students on home visits, and assist with extracurricular activities.
Responsibilities
- Classroom Duties: Assist students in activities, work with individuals and groups, observe learning difficulties, assist with assessments, and maintain records.
- Medically Related: Advise substitute teachers or authorities on medication administration, follow therapy activities, monitor seizures, and assist with care as directed.
- Meeting Physical Needs: Change diapers, clean children, assist with hygiene, lift students, and promote independence.
- Gymnasium Duty: Assist with PE classes, supervise games, help dress and undress students, and assist with wheelchair transfers.
- Lunchroom/Breakfast: Set tables, prepare and deliver food trays, assist with feeding, and assist with cleanup.
- Other Duties: Attend in-service training, abide by district policies, and perform other reasonable related duties.
Working Conditions
Generally pleasant environment. Extensive sitting for prolonged periods of time each day. Some stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting of supplies or students, up to 25 pounds alone or 50 pounds with assistance.
Conduct
Each staff member shall remain free of alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substances and abuse of prescribed controlled substances in the workplace. Serve as a role model for students in ethical and democratic values.
