Responsibilities

• Provide patient care in Pre/Post Op area based on operational needs
• Care for a varied case load of surgical and procedural patients, making advanced assessments of physical and psycho-social needs
• Perform physical assessment related to peri-anesthetic care including respiratory management, pain management, and patient teaching
• Perform physical assessment related to pre-surgical state as well as post-operative assessment
• Provide post-op teaching for patient populations
• Function as a team member facilitating patient flow through pre-op, intra-op, and post-op phases
• Perform appropriate telephone and patient triage skills, balancing quality care with efficient use of time and resources
• Perform verbal assessment with patient prior to admission – in person or via telephone – communicating information to appropriate team members
• Ensure pre-operative care requirements are accomplished through the nursing process including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation
• Perform patient teaching/education as established by the department
• Assess pertinent information, plan, implement, and document interventions and evaluate results
• Maintain and promote patient safety by assessing physical and psychological needs
• Respond to telephone inquiries regarding expressed needs of the caller
• Refer callers to appropriate resources including medical/ambulatory care, hospital services, and community services within established procedures and guidelines
• Thoroughly document all call encounters utilizing manual and/or online information systems at the time of the call
• Alert anesthesia of results of labs, physical assessment, or special needs of individuals with medical problems prior to surgery date
• Communicate arrival time and NPO instructions to patients as prescribed
• Communicate appropriate information including general health information to surgeons and anesthesiologists concerning patient care
• Communicate special physician's orders and ensure patient charting is completed accurately, concisely, and in a timely manner
• Establish an in-depth database by assessing behavioral and physical status of a variety of presurgical patient populations utilizing interview, observation, physical exam, and information from multiple external sources
• Implement safe, competent, and efficient patient care within policies, procedures, standards, and interventions as noted on the multidisciplinary plan of care
• Set priorities adapting to changing patient and unit/clinic situations; initiate action to reduce or correct risk in response to urgent/emergent data
• Assume responsibility and accountability for effectively managing nursing care of individual patients as a team member
• Evaluate patient responses to care based on effectiveness of nursing interventions in relation to established outcomes
• Consult with Medical Staff, Care Team Leader, or Nurse Manager/Surgical Services Supervisor regarding clinical variances and recommend changes to the plan of care
• Integrate nursing interventions into the multidisciplinary plan of care, incorporating appropriate standards of care and practice and patient outcomes
• Incorporate discharge/home care planning into the multidisciplinary plan of care on an ongoing basis
• Serve as preceptor and participate in unit teaching and orientation program for all new staff
• Answer patient questions and provide appropriate pre-operative instructions regarding surgical procedures, medications, anesthesia techniques, and ambulatory care
• Utilize material, equipment, and time in a safe, therapeutic, and cost-efficient manner
• Practice flexibility in scheduling to provide adequate staff coverage on unit
• Participate in quality improvement activities as requested
• Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Nurse Manager
