Practice Leader – Land Development

About the Role

The Practice Leader is a highly organized and experienced individual who assumes a pivotal role in day-to-day leadership, financial management, marketing, coordination, collaboration, team building, mentoring, and staff development within the technical practice. This role involves leading a team of engineers and planners, managing Land Development projects from feasibility analysis through design, permitting, bidding, and construction, and driving positive culture and employee morale.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership, mentorship, and motivation to staff, including recruitment and development of new team members.
• Serve as Project Manager for major clients or as a technical resource to develop studies, reports, plans, specifications, and estimates.
• Perform independent QA/QC on projects and collaborate with other KCI disciplines to market, cross-sell, and complete work.
• Prepare technical and fee proposals and actively participate in local business associations to develop business opportunities.
• Lead annual business planning and ongoing financial stewardship of the Land Development practice.
• Provide leadership and guidance to Project Managers (PMs), Senior Project Managers (Sr. PMs), and staff within the practice.
• Support professional growth and development of staff, including conducting annual performance appraisals.
• Assume responsibility for achieving budgeted margins, project health, and effective cash management across collective projects.
• Lead contract negotiations, project schedule development, and monthly progress reporting.
• Drive business development initiatives, including identifying new opportunities and preparing qualification/experience statements.
• Develop and maintain customer relationships by soliciting performance feedback and identifying client needs.
• Ensure compliance with all KCI policies, procedures, and Quality Management System requirements.
• Represent KCI in technical/industry and community organizations.
• Develop project-specific safety plans and ensure compliance with all safety regulations.
• Deliver projects on time, within budget, and at a high level of quality while meeting scope requirements.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (AEC Industry) and a minimum of 7 years of related professional experience, or 11 years of equivalent professional experience.
• Progressive professional and increasing project management and organizational management experience.
• Proven experience in project management roles within the technical practice.
• Demonstrated leadership capability to build and lead teams of technical practitioners and/or project managers.
• Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire teams.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively manage budgets, project margins, and cash flow.
• Experience in business development, with a focus on maximizing client relationships and identifying growth opportunities.
• Commitment to fostering a culture of continuous improvement and excellence within the practice.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make decisions in a fast-paced environment.
• Proficiency in relevant software and tools used in the practice area.
• Knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards related to the service line.

Qualifications

• Ability to complete the KCI PM Training and Contract Training within six months of start date.
• Professional license or certification within the field of expertise preferred.
• Pre-employment drug screening is a condition of employment.
• Background and motor vehicle checks may be required based upon position.
