Power Plant Operator - Atqasuk

About the role

The North Slope Borough operates, monitors, and maintains generators, switchgear controls, motor control centers, and equipment associated with mechanical systems used to monitor and distribute electricity. This role requires adherence to departmental procedures and Borough policy.

Responsibilities

• Maintains oil and fluid levels of power plant equipment according to standard procedures and Borough policy.
• Maintains water temperatures and pressures, making necessary adjustments.
• Operates and maintains stationary engines, generator sets, and associated mechanical equipment and facilities.
• Maintains generator cooling systems, checks for recommended levels, and changes oil, fuel, and air filters.
• Keeps a daily log of equipment performance, power output, generator operations, and power and fuel outages.
• Aids the Lead Power Plant Operator and Village Services Supervisor with inventory management, requesting, receiving, and storing supplies and equipment.
• Inspects and cleans equipment and facility, reporting maintenance needs and deficiencies to supervisor.
• Complies with all safety rules and regulations, attends safety meetings, and responds to power plant alarms and power failures, reporting issues to supervisor.
• May work non-traditional schedules including evenings, holidays, weekends, and be subject to 24-hour on-call status.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school graduate or GED.
• At least 12 years of education and related work experience, or a combination of education and experience.
• Required to obtain Incident Command System (IS) 100, IS 200, IS 700, and IS 800 certifications.
• Required to obtain CPR, AED, and Basic First Aid Certifications.
• Ability to obtain RCRA, HAZWOPER, and SPCC trainings within the probationary period.

• Knowledge of North Slope Borough organization, operations, policies, and procedures.

Skills

• Knowledgeable in electrical systems and mechanics.
• Ability to operate and maintain complex machinery.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow safety protocols.
