Power Plant Mechanic II

About the role

The Power Plant Mechanic II is responsible for maintaining plant equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable plant operations. This role performs preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, and capital improvements, troubleshoots mechanical systems, and assists in training less experienced mechanics.

Responsibilities

• Perform Gas Turbine, Steam Turbine, and Plant Balance of Plant (BOP) mechanical maintenance.
• Work safely, following company and operator policies, procedures, and work practices.
• Analyze test data using installed and portable test equipment and technical manuals to troubleshoot equipment and systems.
• Coordinate job activities relating to job planning, work methods, job standards, and job reporting.
• Perform routine and non-routine preventive and corrective maintenance on plant equipment.
• Be on call to support emergency repair or monitoring as necessary.
• Assist other plant personnel as needed, including maintenance and upkeep of site buildings and grounds.
• Maintain and repair plant mechanical devices, including pumps, couplings, and motors.
• Prepare, maintain, and provide reports/documents as required.
• Review P&ID drawings and mechanical diagrams.
• Communicate the condition of plant systems and equipment to others.
• Direct and perform work in accordance with company and regulatory agency policies and procedures.
• Monitor and perform required periodic preventive maintenance, TIL updates, and reports.
• Complete detailed planning, product specification, and time estimates for mechanical repairs and installations.
• Create procedures related to mechanical systems.
• Learn all power plant systems and stay abreast of system updates.
• Operate plant mobile equipment, including forklifts and man lifts.
• Observe operation of plant equipment and processes for normal operation, troubleshoot potential issues, and report to leadership.
• Assist in performing preventive and minor corrective maintenance on engines, gas blowers, and associated equipment.
• Assist in cleaning, overhauling, and replacing engines, generators, motors, pumps, and associated equipment.
• Support plant operations in repairing, replacing, and maintaining equipment as necessary.
• Be available for night, overtime, weekend, and holiday work as required.
• Support job responsibilities outside of scheduled work hours as needed.
• Occasional travel may be required.

Requirements

• High School Diploma, degree from a technical/vocational school, related military service, or equivalent required.
• Minimum of 3 years of power plant and/or gas/steam turbine experience.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with an advanced understanding of chemistry, physics, electricity, and mathematics.
• Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions.
• Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail, accuracy, and timeliness.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Basic computer knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Maximo, and various other programs.
• Working knowledge of combined cycle power plant systems, operations, and maintenance.
• Ability to make maintenance-related decisions with minimum direct supervision.
• Pipefitter, millwright, welding, and carpentry skills are desired.
• Operations experience is desirable; combined cycle operations experience is preferred.
• Valid U.S. driver's license.

Physical Requirements

• Adhere to large amounts of standing, walking, bending, squatting, and lifting (up to 50 lbs).
• Use arms and hands to signal, grab, hold, turn, push, and pull objects, materials, controls, and tools.
• Occasionally work at heights, climb ladders and stairways, and work from scaffolding or platforms.
• Wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety glasses/goggles, earplugs/muffs, masks/respirators, safety vests, gloves, and steel-toe boots.
• Able to hear (within defined dB limits) to detect plant alarms, equipment condition, and receive oral instructions.
• Able to see and smell to determine plant operating conditions and avoid safety hazards.

Work Environment

• Work is generally performed inside the power plant but may involve all weather conditions, ranging from warm/hot to cool/cold, with occasional rain.
• Noise levels will be moderate to high.
• Job site contains light to heavy equipment vehicles, small to large equipment, materials, communication equipment, and tools.
• Environment includes people standing, walking, sitting, signaling, and talking, as well as bells, whistles, and alarms.
