Power Maintainer Trainee, Regional Railroad. (#0734)

Overall Description

Will be trained to advance into either the Overhead Maintainer, or Traction Power Maintainer position which consist of; construction, and repair the overhead catenary, primary signal power and transmission systems; or operate department trucks and catenary maintenance vehicles in addition to utilizing acquired Physical Characteristics qualifications. Will be trained to climb wood and steel poles and work in confined spaces, or trained to acquire Railroad Physical Characteristics qualifications.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Operates assigned overhead vehicles and various mechanical truck accessories.
  • Operates derrick and winch; operates wire stringing truck; picks up old trolley wire with assistance; keeps proper tension on trolley wire while stringing; measures and cuts wire.
  • Affords assistance in the installation and repair of electric switch and signal equipment, signal and switch mechanisms, wiring and controls and trolley contactors.
  • Affords assistance in elimination of interruptions to service caused by breakdowns of various vehicular traffic, accidents and trolley line breakdowns.
  • Affords assistance in performing general overhead trolley line maintenance and repair work, including working from tower.
  • Affords assistance in the installation and repair of various warning and clearance signs.
  • Affords assistance in delivering material and supplies as required.
  • Affords assistance to employees of high classification as assigned.
  • Affords assistance in removing and replacing trolley poles from trolley wires on moving trolley cars or trackless trolleys.
  • Affords assistance in writing accident data at location of trouble; submits same to Supervisor.
  • Affords assistance in changing tires on trucks.
  • Affords assistance in maintaining record of materials used.
  • Affords assistance in operating radio transmitting and receiving equipment on trucks.
  • Affords assistance in performing general housecleaning; cleans work area of waste, unused materials, tools and supplies; cleans and washes truck.
  • Affords assistance in accomplishing daily report of truck operating condition.
  • Affords assistance in interpreting information from line section book; supplies same to Overhead Maintainers.
  • Affords assistance in capping of steel pole sleeves with cement.
  • Affords assistance in acting as poleman on surface tower rail car.

Additional Specific Responsibilities

  • Affords assistance in performing general overhead catenary and power distribution systems maintenance and repair work on ground or from elevated equipment.
  • Works in inclement weather, and in close proximity to energized wires.

Qualifications And Experience

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Must have previous Electrical training and/or work experience.
  • Must satisfactorily complete all written qualifications tests.
  • Knowledge of AC power distribution; have ability to work from drawings.
  • Must possess a valid Pennsylvania class driver's license or equivalent.
  • Must pass manufacturers and/or other courses as required.
  • Satisfactorily complete qualifications tests as follows: Distribution Electricity, Distribution Blueprint Reading, Basic Mathematics, Overhead Hand Tools.
  • Must have knowledge of D.C. power distribution.
