About the role

The postdoctoral research associate will develop tools to mobilize data in herbarium specimens for conservation action, as part of a project funded through the Bezos Earth Fund’s AI for Climate and Nature Grand Challenge.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and integrate vision-language and computer vision models
  • Translate AI outputs into formats aligned with Red List criteria
  • Collaborate with conservation scientists to ensure the tool is accurate, interpretable, and usable for real-world conservation assessments

Requirements

  • PhD in a relevant field (e.g., computer science, ecology, botany)
  • Experience with natural language processing and computer vision
  • Strong background in biodiversity informatics and conservation biology
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

Qualifications

  • Experience with herbarium specimen data and biodiversity informatics
  • Knowledge of IUCN Red List criteria and conservation prioritization methods
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Skills

  • Expertise in machine learning and deep learning
  • Proficiency in Python and related libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch)
  • Experience with web development and database management
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

Pay

Salary range: $80,000 - $90,000 per year
