We are seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to join the Gao Lab at the BCM Department of Neuroscience. This position is supported by a recently awarded NIH R01 grant and focuses on frontier, discovery-driven research in protein phosphorylation and dynamic regulation, specifically at the axon initial segment (AIS) of neurons. The role offers excellent collaboration opportunities within Baylor College of Medicine and the Texas Medical Center.

About the role

The Postdoctoral Associate will conduct advanced cellular neuroscience research, investigating the mechanisms of AIS protein phosphorylation and dynamic regulation. The position involves designing, analyzing, and interpreting experiments using molecular biology, genome engineering, proteomics, microscopic imaging, and electrophysiology.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, directs, and conducts advanced cellular neuroscience research with a focus on AIS protein phosphorylation and dynamic regulation.
  • Designs, analyzes, and interprets experiments using molecular biology, genome engineering, proteomics, microscopic imaging, and electrophysiology.
  • Establishes new research protocols and procedures.
  • Provides intellectual contributions to other ongoing projects in the lab and assists the PI in shaping long-term research strategies.
  • Demonstrates commitment to fostering a collaborative lab environment and promoting positive group dynamics.
  • Contributes to everyday lab tasks and training of students and other trainees.
  • Applies for grant opportunities when appropriate.
  • Attends departmental seminar series and other departmental events.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • MD or Ph.D. in Basic Science, Health Science, or a related field.
  • No prior experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree in Neuroscience, Cell and Molecular Biology, or related fields.
  • Proficiency in standard molecular and cellular neurobiology techniques, such as vector design and cloning, cell/neuron culture, immunocytochemistry, Western blot, laboratory animal procedures, and scientific writing.
  • Ability and strong motivation to lead research projects with minimal supervision.
  • Experience in synaptic plasticity, programming, structural biology, calcium imaging, or electrophysiology is highly valued.
  • Self-starter with excellent interpersonal skills and time management ability.
  • First-author publications in the field of Cellular Neuroscience is desired (exceptions may be made for outstanding candidates with clear justification).

Pay

Baylor College of Medicine typically follows the NIH stipulated stipend guidelines for Postdoctoral Associates.
