Postdoctoral Associate

Job Summary

The Bukhari Lab at St. John’s University, New York, invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate position in Artificial Intelligence, Health Informatics, and Knowledge-Based Systems. The position focuses on advancing foundational and applied research in machine learning and AI systems for healthcare and scientific discovery. The research program develops novel methods in large language models, knowledge representation, neuro-symbolic reasoning, and trustworthy AI, with applications including medical coding, drug repurposing, clinical language understanding, and intelligent decision-support systems.

Job Responsibilities

• Conduct independent and collaborative research in AI and health informatics
• Design, implement, and evaluate machine learning and NLP systems
• Develop scalable AI pipelines and research prototypes
• Contribute to peer-reviewed publications and conference submissions
• Support grant proposals and research dissemination activities
• Mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers

Competencies, Education, Experience

• Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Biomedical Informatics, Computational Linguistics, or a closely related field.
• Candidates must have a strong publication record and demonstrated research expertise in machine learning, NLP, or AI systems development.
• Strong programming skills in Python and experience with modern AI frameworks are required.

Preferred Qualifications

• We seek candidates with strong research experience and first-author publications in top-tier venues such as NeurIPS, ICLR, CVPR, ICML, ACL, EMNLP, KDD, AAAI, or leading journals.
• Experience in one or more of the following areas is highly desirable: medical coding, drug repurposing, knowledge graphs, knowledge-based embeddings, large language models, and trustworthy AI systems.
