About the Role

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and the Atrium Health Musculoskeletal Institute are recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to lead studies on the prevention and treatment of infection following severe trauma. The role focuses on characterizing antibiotic-coated implants across two domains: the biologic interface (host cell response vs. bacterial colonization) and the biomechanical/biomaterials interface (how coatings affect implant material properties and mechanics). These preclinical studies will run in parallel with an ongoing prospective longitudinal observational clinical study, offering a unique opportunity to integrate mechanistic findings with clinical outcomes. The position is co-advised across musculoskeletal biology and biomechanics/biomaterials labs, with mentorship tailored to the candidate's background and interests. Applicants from biology or engineering disciplines are welcome.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with project teams to develop and implement research plans, protocols, analyses, and prepare reports, abstracts, and manuscripts.

  • Monitor the operation of complex technical procedures and equipment in consultation with Research Scientists.
  • Assist in designing and modifying experimental and routine research/testing procedures based on departmental needs.
  • Perform regular scientific literature searches and maintain current, complete literature references.
  • Submit grant applications to obtain research funding and manuscripts for publication based on research projects.

Requirements

  • Doctorate Degree (required).
